And by the way Bob, it ain’t gonna do nuthin during hedge cutting meetings, MOT inspections, coffee mornings and whatever other excuses you come up with for not watching it.

Dennis, listen very carefully. I will say this only once. The restaurant/cafe where we meet for coffee at 10.30 every Thursday is called The Topiary Restaurant. We drink coffee and eat wonderful scones but do not cut any hedges, inspite of what the name may suggest. Nothing prevents this get together. So now you know for your next visit, in plenty of time, to arrange your hand waving for a different day, if you wish my continued involvement. ☕️☕️☕️ Bob

Coffee and scones. Surely they have a large 60” plasma internet enabled telly. We’d look really good on that and at the same time you could do regaling about Skiathos and Skopelos to the friends?

So it was worth it to go into town on our last day, not only to pick up our stuff, but also to get this photo of the man’s computer. Look, there’s a plane coming! Zoom in on the picture and the plane is just above the Bourtzi. Beautiful picture, live view and he can pan it from right to left to show glorious views. One small fly in the ointment, he’s spitting nails. He has ordered a digital line from OTE and they have forecast 1st May. It was difficult to stop him berating them. What we need is everybody who knows the new mayor to contact him to get him to lean on OTE to get the digital line installed.

Oh, it’s getting there, isn’t it.
Just one thing, from that screen grab, is it going to be possible to photobomb Skiathos? Is the camera pointing anywhere you can go to smoke and wave?

It has several panning points, from old port as in the picture, to extreme end of new port. It can pan, tilt and zoom, so it's possible to display yourself quite indecently. Except you're not going to be able to pan, tilt, zoom yourself, I don't think. Apparently the old one used to be accessible at first, until it became impossible from the multiple accesses, so it was stopped. I don't suppose they'll be allowing that to happen again. I shall try in September to be nice to the man to see if I can wangle access myself, but i don't hold out much hope. You will have to do what I used to - go to the Bourtzi approach, then stand and wave for long enough for people to see you, in the same way as I did last Thursday from Skopelos.

It’s going to be great, once it’s live. Thank you for your persistence Dennis ..... you’ve surely played a huge part in this development 😄

Dennis - how did you get this last pic? There’s someone waving at the camera. Is it live already?

I have been given special access to view the test site. I'm not publicising that information. The girl was posing, not waving, for somebody who was taking pictures by the clock tower (I assume this from the way she was acting). I thought I had waited for her to push off!

Another (useless) update.
I wrote an email to the new mayor moments before leaving Skiathos on 12th July asking him to intervene in getting the digital line from OTE. I've not had any acknowledgement. I've just noticed that he actually doesn't take office until 1st September, which rather makes my email a bit pointless... Email quote .....
To Mr Thodoris Tzoumas, Mayor of Skiathos.
Dear Mr Mayor, For many years now, the town of Skiathos has been without a camera on the clock tower since the last one was destroyed by a storm.
Many people have been waiting for a new camera and yesterday I was very happy when I visited the Town Hall and saw the new camera testing. It is magnificent and I know many lovers of Skiathos all over the world will be so happy to be able to see through the camera again.
But I was sad to hear that the new camera needs a new digital line from OTE and they have said they can not supply one until May. That is very bad news and I am sure you will agree with me that it will be good for the town and tourism for the camera to be working online as soon as possible.
So I am writing to ask you Mr Mayor to speak to OTE and persuade them that it is important for the Municipality of Skiathos to have the new camera and for them to supply a digital line as soon as possible.
I am going home to England this morning, but I shall return to Skiathos on 6th September and I hope you can persuade OTE to supply the line before then.
Yours faithfully, Dennis Naylor From my iPad Pro

I really admire your tenacity Dennis. If Greece has an equivalent to the MBE I think you should get one for services to tourism! 😉😄 Bob

I’ll do tenacity in September, Bob. I’ll climb those steps and get a selfie screenshot of my head from the webcam. But I do so hope you or other members will do the screenshot from your own access instead.
