The lovely sunshine has returned - with a vengeance! Yesterday and today were both very hot, though there was a nice breeze. Yesterday we breakfasted at Foodie Cafe and then caught the bus from the terminus to bus stop 5 to spend the day at the Swell bar garden in the Angeliki hotel. Paul loves it there as you can sunbathe in the garden, next to the beach, so there’s no sand involved! We had a late lunch there (baguette for Paul and the house special salad for me, which I love) before going to catch the bus back to town. It’s just a bit too much of a walk for Paul these days, especially when it’s hot. Anyway, we waited for ages & ages with no bus sightings in either direction and got chatting to a nice Swedish couple who were off to the medical centre. A taxi stopped to try to coerce us in- two euros pp to bus stops 4 & 3 ...... a result! Am hoping the Swedish gentleman was ok - he was very quiet and his wife said he had chest pains. I think I would have ordered a taxi immediately, not tried to catch a bus first!
Last night we ate at the Mouria taverna - no starters, lamb chops for Paul (surprise, surprise!) and a chicken and pepper stew-type dish for me. The food was lovely - the chips were definitely ‘proper’ ones and we had a glass of wine each. The bill was just over €30 - excellent value. In fact, this year all of our meals have been in the €30~35 range as we’re not big eaters/drinkers lately. We had a couple of drinks at the Astoria bar afterwards, more or less opposite Dinos eatery on Papadiamanti street. We’ve never been there before, but the Greek family serving drinks were really friendly. Again, back in the room before 10.30pm. We’re proper lightweights this holiday!
Still no Dave sightings - think he’s avoiding us!!

Me again! I’ve just noticed I missed Monday’s meal out! We didn’t do much in the day - I had a walk round the Old Town and Plakes, taking lots of photos and we also met some Boomers in Mythos on the harbour. It’s always good to put names to faces and have a quick chat. We ate at the Giardino Segretio, alias Secret Garden. Again a lovely meal, though we made the mistake of sharing a starter .... gorgeous, but huge! We had the Portobello mushrooms, stuffed with a delicious creamy, mushroomy filling and topped with cheese and crispy Parma ham, on a bed of rocket leaves and cherry tomatoes. Our mains arrived far too quickly afterwards (an hour’s gap would have been good 😉). I ordered a pappardelle minced beef dish (nice, but not spectacular) and Paul ordered a Poor Man’s Pasta - penne pasta with a tomato and bacon sauce and loads of cheese on top which the waiter blow-torched at the table! Good fun. We couldn’t do the food justice, sadly, but explained it’s us & not them! The bill was €39, which included table water, an Aperol Spritz and very palatable glass of red - excellent value.
We were too full for a nightcap, so walked the food off and fell into bed just after ten. 😴😴

Kate, feeling rather envious now. Think we need a cheeky week! I seriously can’t wait until October when we’ve booked for Cyprus 🥴 Keep up your posts so that I can relay to John in hope that he begins to feel the same 😅

Had a wonderful fish dish in Mouria my first trip to the island. Fish baked in the oven. There were two/three fish in a creamy sauce. So delicious. Went back the following year but that particular night they had sold out of the dish. The memory lingers .... 😃

Must try that one, Amy - sounds right up my street.
Tre - good luck with your cunning plan 😉. I’ll do my best from this end!
Last nights’s meal was at Dionysus. After a quick drink at Portobello - and meeting Dave and his lovely wife Sue, at last - we decided to stay close to base. It had been a hot walk to the tennis club and back earlier in the day, so we didn’t want another trek. It’s a couple of years since we last ate there, but we received a warm welcome and enjoyed a tasty meal. For anyone who hasn’t been, they offer a set meal where you pay the cost of your main course (ranging between €11 - €16) and also get either soup or tzatziki, then a Greek salad, then your main, then coffee and panacotta for pud. We chose french onion soup from the three soup choices, then Paul had ..... wait for it..... lamb chops!!! I had medallions of pork with mushrooms and asparagus spears. Delicious! I think the quality of the food is even better than it used to be there, possibly because there is some seriously good competition around. We shared half a litre of red wine and the total bill was €38.50. Full and happy!
I was very pleased to see that Il Cantinello, a pizzeria & trattoria new last year, was still open. It’s opposite Dionysus and is another courtyard setting and though we haven’t eaten there, we were shown round last June and were impressed by the look of it. We hope to try it at some point.
After our meal, a short stroll, then as we passed the Astoria Paul noticed that Europa league football final was just starting, so we had a nightcap & watched the first half before bed. Such a warm welcome from the lovely chap who runs this place - must ask his name. (It seems to be the same family who run this and a dress shop next door)
Oh, and on our way ‘home’ we bumped into the birthday boy again!

I've eaten at Dionyssos 3 times since 2014 and never had a poor meal. Your post reminded me of the set meal offer, I'm pretty sure that we went for that option last year when mum was joined for the week by her niece so we ate as a 3 on a few occasions. I like the setting there, just enough back off the strip to offer a bit of peace and quiet but still has atmosphere.

Another hot and cloudless day, yesterday. Paul decided he’d rather spend the day around town and on our balcony, rather than trek to a beach. My plan was to check out Rada beach restaurant and its swimming pool, for future reference, so took the Achladias/Vasilias beach water taxi from the harbour. I love the water taxis, but Paul hates small boats - probably why he didn’t want to come. Anyway, I wasn’t paying proper attention (as usual, haha) and disembarked at the wrong beach - only I didn’t realise! I wandered up & down what was actually Achladias before giving up & ‘phoning a friend’, who pointed out my mistake. I’m quite savvy at either end of the island, but realise that my knowledge of the middle resorts is pretty lacking 😏 A quick refreshment stop, and then a long hot slog up to the road and to the top of that enormous hill between bus stops 10 & 9 .... phew, did I need a drink by the time I got to Rada!
I decided to have lunch there - a much needed bottle of water, a glass of rose and a large Greek salad hit the spot nicely. The beach looked ok, but the Rada pool was much more inviting so I asked if it was ok and enjoyed a peaceful couple of hours as the only user - fabulous. After that, I walked along Vasilias Beach & Small Vasilias and up through the trees to the road near bus stop 6. Two ladies had been waiting for the bus for a while so we were all happy to share a taxi back to the Acropolis for a couple of euros each - and no standing up, which it would have been on the bus at 5pm!
Paul had spent a restful day without me (!) - we had a drink at Main Street bar, where we encountered Birthday Boy Dave and some of his family, then got ready and ate at Basilikos. It’s a lovely restaurant and we both enjoyed our meal (guess what Paul had?!!!), but mine was so filling that I suffered a bit from overeating all night! I chose battered cod with Skordalia, which is garlic mashed potato (more like a purée). The batter was really crispy, but the piece of cod was large .... am still struggling today, which is most unlike me!!! Paul’s lamb chops, chips & salad looked lovely - no complaints from him.
We had a nightcap at Phedrock, where there was a group of ladies really enjoying dancing to the northern soul they play there. I probably should have joined them, to work off the food!!!! A lovely young man called Hari is working for Phedrock this year - we had a good chat with him. Hari is Welsh/Greek and we got to know him in 2017 when he worked at the Draft Bar (closed these past two years) and he was telling us that he’s just completed his National Service, which wasn't too bad (his words!). Just as we were leaving we encountered the birthday celebrants again .... still standing, which was impressive!

Sorry, Caridad - thought I had replied! Dionysus is just off the right hand side of Papadiamanti Street when you walk up from the port. Walk past Papadiamanti’s house and I think it’s the next street. There’s a dress shop on the corner and you can see the restaurant sign from the Main Street.
UPDATE: walked down to the port earlier & noted that the street is opposite the nut stall, which makes it much easier to find!

It has made me so cheerful I’d like to invite you to my birthday party in September. Please do come so that I can thank you in person.

18th and 80 (note traditional Yorkshire frugality on my part - Kate won't be able to attend because she doesn't arrive until 22nd!!!)
EDIT - 17th! How can I get my birthday wrong? It's not as if I wasn't there!
