I've mentioned a couple of times about facing redundancy, so I thought now would be an appropriate time for an update.
Yesterday was my last day teaching in my school after 25 years service. I'm being made redundant as the trust which has taken over my academy no longer wants my subject (RS) taught at GCSE.
I've been facing redundancy for around 15 months, and largely tried to avoid it by being available to teach other subjects, but this spring I decided I'd had enough of fighting to stay in a job where I wasn't going to be able to do what I'd trained to do, in a subject which was my passion.
I have been fortunate enough to gain another position in an academy closer to where I live, in a pastoral role (I have many year experience in pastoral work), and start in September.
Here's the Skiathos bit. You may remember that my other half got a sneaky week away in Portugal, as her friend had broken up with her partner, and didn't want the holiday going to waste. I agreed, but one of the provisos was that I'd go away for a week myself if I could find anywhere cheap enough. The idea was that, if I didn't find work, I'd go into supply teaching. September is notoriously quiet for supply, so I thought it'd be a relatively low-cost way to have a break, given that there'd be little-to-no work to turn down.
As things were getting late on, and the great deal came up at the Palace, I booked it...only to find myself getting a job offer at the last minute. My new employers were good enough to honour any pre-booked holidays, and told me it was fine for me to go.
Anyway, here's to the future. I won't be going to Skiathos in term time again until after I retire.

Well, you've got to admit, getting redundancy and a new job is fairly acceptable. I got the redundancy but I didn't at the time want a new job - that ambition escaped me until I discovered that my bank balance was disappearing at an alarming rate! Then I discovered that elderlies are pretty much unemployable! Good fortune in your new role.

The redundancy package was 'substantial'.
However, I was on a TLR (extra money for a management position). The responsibilities which went with it disappeared in the restructure caused by the new trust taking over - the money was protected for 3 years, of which I'd had one, so I lost 2 years of that.
Of the remaining pay, my new salary is more or less half. I'm losing more in the next 18 months than I gained from the redundancy.
However, I fully appreciate that I've been very fortunate in my working life, and there are others far less fortunate than me.
Still, there goes that Skiathian villa I was going to buy... :-)

Ah, yes, restructuring. It's over 23 years since I left and as I still live near my old office, occasionally I meet former colleagues. For lack of any interesting conversation, I always ask "How's the restructuring?" - Works every time!!

its great to hear you have another job. i think men in particular miss workplace cameraderie and s structured day, even if the job isnt their ideal. good news you still have your holiday.

Just a little more Skiathos related.
The first couple of days have gone well. My new job involves running around the school, chasing pastoral & behavioural issues. The new school is effectively a giant quad, with one of the blocks having four floors.
My iPhone is telling me that I walked 6 miles, climbed 25 floors, and moved 13,000 steps yesterday.
I should be perhaps just a bit more beach body ready in four weeks!

The new job is going very well indeed.
If anyone’s interested in finding out what happened to the old one, watch BBC1’s Inside Out at 7:30 tonight - Yorkshire region.
Trust me (no pun intended), you’ll find it an eye-opener.
