So here's a strange one. I've just looked up the holiday we went on two years ago. Exactly the same search criteria at TUI (airport, number going, dates, etc), and what did cost us c.£5.3k would now cost us c.£9,100. However, I then noticed this was from an executive suite. I tried to change it to a standard room, and... There are none left. Sold out.

I hate to use the term, ‘ but friends who have bars on the island ‘ echo YMs theory, it appears not all nationalities enjoy social drinking as much as us Brits, to the extent I was told last year of a party of 4 who ordered 2 cocktails between them, and managed to make them last for 3 hours, hence taking up lucrative profit making seats.
Eating out is by no means expensive on the island, in fact I think self catering would prove a negative experience financially, that is of course depending on diet.
Perhaps the lack of footfall ( just my opinion) could be due to those who travel from mainland by ferry,
I don’t think the way airlines are already cancelling flights, Newcastle being a fine example, will help the situation.

So one solution would be to remove cooking stuff from self catering rooms.

It's not eastern europeans they should have been courting but more Scandinavians. Compared with the price of beer in bars in Denmark, Sweden etc Greece must seem cheap as chips. I recall the area I stayed in to the west of Chania in Crete a few years back was dominated by Scandinavians and the bars were doing good business as a result.

Perhaps the lack of footfall ( just my opinion) could be due to those who travel from mainland by ferry, We self cater, sort of - quite simply, we are not interested in cooking on holiday. Basically, self catering accommodation is cheaper than meals included and anyway, we like to eat out. So breakfast is a cold one - digestive biscuit and tomato open sandwiches for me, Vera has weetabix and yogurt (diabetes demands "proper" food) and in July, we gobble a huge bowl of black cherries, in September a big peach each and grapes. Then we eat out everything else - midday snack Giros (and beer for me, of course - I go on holiday to drink at least one beer a day), then meal out in the early evening (usually one starter, tzatziki, then one main course, and beer for me - I go on holiday to drink at least one beer with my evening meal). We have absolutely no interest in cocktails, sorry. I go on holiday to take a sip of Mavrodaphne if there's a bottle about.
Self catering (bringing their own food too) are the ferry car arrivals from eastern Europe, Romania etc. So not a lot of value to any accommodation, whether five star or budget.

Back in the good old days, I observed a Finnish girl in Samos escaping from their alcohol prices. She sat all day, every day, at the bar drinking spirits, each one having its tab stuck on a spike on the bar beside her. From time to time she'd pick up the spike and pay the man and start again. Hollow legs, ridiculously low prices by her Finland standards and a head with a brewery cask capacity. I had neither the money nor the inclination to join her, but the barman loved her to bits.

Hi just following this thread and note the comment about Newcastle flights being cancelled? We are flying from Newcastle at the end of August but have not been contacted by TUI. Indeed when you go on their website they are still flying from Newcastle on my dates. Any comments would be of interest.

Similar experience in Crete, except one of the two girls I was drinking with didn't quite have the capacity of the other. After she fell off her bar stool for the second time I made my excuses and headed home.

Dont treat me as infallible oracle, but from Facebook Boomerangers page I think they (members) are saying they have discovered that TUI flights from Newcastle which perhaps were previously TUI flights on Thomas Cook planes are being switched to Manchester. Don’t take my word for it, I’m just passing on rumours which for some people have apparently turned into facts. Harass TUI for horse’s mouth information. I’m out on the road just now, but when I get home I’ll see what I can I’ve you by way back f links and/or screenshots.

Thank you Dennisn. Facebook boomerangers is where I first saw mention of this but would have expected to see more posts than there was. Perhaps just the early flights at the moment?

Might just be the very early season flights. TC used to do this as well, if they couldn't fill planes from 2 separate locations they would merge them. Tended to happen early season in May, once the demand went up later in the season they would operate from both again. Just keep an eye on it as the season progresses.

Look on a Boomerangers, thread started by Lynn Douglas Dudgeon. Talk about Friday flights cancelled and only Wednesday flights. They say applies to their bookings in May, July and September.

After the whole TC debacle, this may take a while to settle down.
Villa Anastasia Junior still doesn’t have a UK travel company, which is ridiculous.
Let’s see how it settles down.

I've just found out that Villa Anastasia Junior has been picked up for 2020 by a travel agent.
Unfortunately, it's a Swedish travel agent.
It's a great shame. VAJ was a great example of self catering rooms which were finished and operated to a very high standard.
Sort of 4* hotel standard rooms, just not a hotel.
