At the time of posting it only needed another 8 members to take membership over 1000, so why do so few people post? Bob

I genuinely think its the ease of posting pics on fb that makes it quicker to post often in there?

We'll have to get Bob to do a count of how many posters there are on FB (it's beyond my limited skills). I don't post on there BECAUSE it's easier to post pictures, just occasionally it seems worthwhile. And I don't think I'd post if it were de rigeur to post a picture whenever you post. But I much prefer this forum for information and its structure. Hoarses for coarses I suppose.

I totally agree Dennis. This forum, with its different sections, is a far better source of information. I also like FB for the banter and the ease of posting photos. Definitely a place for both. By the way, no skill needed to find out the number of members on FB. The figure is posted on the right hand side. Bob

Oh I've seen the number of members of the group Bob, but I was referring to your opening comment that although there are loadsa members here, not many of them post. I see there are half as many again members of the FB group, but in all honesty I seem to see an awful lot of boomerang posters - i.e. the same people posting every day.
I reckon if you and I and a few others posted our wandering thoughts and breakfast achievements every day, we'd make this site as busy as FB and just as inconsequential (I'll get me coat!).

Novel coming up!
Maybe it is easier to post and add photos on FB. I use FB all the time for personal things and running a cycling club FB page and it is very easy, it has really put forums like this on the back foot with regards to adding photos. I am a member of the Old Boomerangers Page on FB, but rarely post and only occasionally see what has been posted. It's not that I am not interested, but I find that the amount of photos, beautiful that they all are, too many and without any description of what the picture is of and where.
I have just looked and it is possible to add attachments directly to posts on here, but for any real storage limit, you have to pay, something I am not willing to personally fund and therefore it is not enabled on this site. It isn't really that difficult to have a Photobucket or Flickr account which you load your photo to and just link to it on the forum post and they are free for an account which can host a fair few photographs.
When this forum was originally set up as a temporary measure, on the collapse of the old Skiathos Bulletin Board, I didn't expect now for it to still be being used. It was never set up to be a photo posting and sharing facility, it was set up for what it is, a replacement forum, where people can talk and share experiences/information about Skiathos, an island we all love. A large majority of the users from the old Bulletin Board never complained about posting photos on that forum (but then again I can't remember whether you could post directly into that forum). They did however, instead of joining this forum on the demise of the Bulletin Board, migrate to using FB and the Old Boomerangers Page. The main reason for not joining this forum at the time seemed to be that, the old Bulletin Board had years of posts on it and this forum being new, had little on it. If they had all migrated here, this forum would have so much more information for people to be viewed.
The FB Old Boomerangers Page is great for instantaneous information for the time you are viewing FB, but it is rare to be able to see any information posted for more than a few days without trawling backwards through the posts, hoping to come across your desired information. This forum allows information posted to be kept forever and is easy to search for or be directed too.
It is great that there are nearly 1000 members, but is that just down to having to be a member to view and post? I think so. A great majority of the members have never posted and I guess they have heard about the forum, joined so they can see what it is all about and then never used it again. Are many of the members visitors to the island for the first time and are just trying to find out information about it, but never intend to participate in the forum? Is the answer to make this forum a non registration forum, so that anybody can just post without joining? My personal feeling is that the forum would have many more SPAM posts on it and would take a lot more moderation.
It is a shame that more members do not actively participate in posting. Anybody with any suggestions to encourage them, please feel free to PM your ideas. It is thanks to Bob, that over the last few months he has promoted the Forum on the Old Boomerangers Page, especially regarding the "Who's Going to Skiathos in......" list, which has seen many tens of new members, but it seems like no real increase in the amount of people regularly posting on the forum.
Sorry for boring you!
Woody

I cant be bothered to join facebook, lots of people on it seem to post every little detail of their life, and ive seen so many people get abuse for no reason. I joined this when looking for information, and used to read ians post everyday. I have a picture in my mind of all the regular posters !!

Your points are well made Woody and I hope you didn't think that my original question was intended as criticism of the site. Far from it. I just find it disappointing that so many people have registered, probably as you say to pick up on a specific piece of information, but don't take the opportunity to post their own experiences. Here's hoping that contributions or queries will pick up again as we get closer to the holiday season. Bob

Some people are really good at writing informative and witty reports that I love to read.Im not one of them and I don't think my time in Skiathos would be of interest to people although I do have a fabulous time.If you have a way with words it makes the reports more interesting.

Oh boy! Cariad sees me as 32 inch waist, smart hair and lovely teeth and she lurves my T-Shirts. Thank you Cariad.
Woody, I wish I could have put it as well as you have. This website gave me advance information before I went to Skiathos and has continued to bolster my liking for the island.
Bob, I'm sure nobody thought you were criticising the site - I too saw it as merely a comment that it's a shame so few members post. On another website where I'm a member, there are well over 300,000 registered members, but the daily posts are a tiny fraction of them and several are regulars. Since I joined that site 10 years ago I've made 13,450 posts. At the same time, somebody else who joined a year before me has made 330. There should probably be a forum rank of Verbal Diarrhoeia-ist for the likes of me and I'm not sure that's a desirable feature!

No Bob, I didn't take it at all as criticism. I find it slightly frustrating that so few people who register, post. I just thought I would post my feelings.
I am sure as you say, as Skiathos opens up for the summer, more people may contribute.

I think the good thing about this forum is no one ever criticises anyones choice or thoughts, whereas TA can sometimes get a bit heated, Reading the world according to dennis always puts a smile on my face for the day, often out loud. Reading the forums I always have a picture of skiathos in my mind, usually the swell bar looking over megali ammos beach at lunchtime ! This year weve booked for stoupa as it was on our must do list along with paxos, as the time gets nearer we are feeling very homesick for skiathos and seeing all the people we have got to know over the years. unfortunately my husband only gets half the annual leave I do which makes squeezing another week in difficult. Especially as we have a few long weekends booked. Already planning our skiathos trip next year, then my son, and husbands daughter have booked their weddings for next year, more expense! looks like dennis will have to put on his superman tee shirt and tuck us under his arm and fly us there ! ( you need to have read an earlier thread where a little boy believed he was superman to understand that ! )

I must admit that when I first joined this forum it was to check out Skiathos as I knew a couple of people that were repeat visitors and I wanted to know what the draw was. I had no real intention of participating as I had never posted anything anywhere on the internet at that time. I am so glad that I changed my mind after biting the bullet and sending a PM to Dennis. It has been great sharing my holiday experiences with like minded people and I found that the more I posted the more confident I became.
I like the fact that, as Cariad has mentioned, that posters on this site are not judgmental, and reluctant to join FB for many reasons. So this site gets a big thumbs up from me.
Oh, and I now know why Skiathos keeps calling people back year after year! :-)
