Having been to several Greek islands in August we've come across a few wasps in our time but our experience of wasps in south west corfu a couple of years ago almost spoilt our holiday. They were everywhere and although we know to ignore them, that was pretty hard when you had about 5 or 6 of them landing on your food at every meal time despite the staff at the various establishments burning coffee to deter them. My sister was stung by one in Corfu town when it landed on her and she accidentally brushed against it. We saw so many wasps that it's put her off visiting again.
I wonder if somebody can give an honest reply and tell me what it's really like in Skiathos with regards to the wasps in August? Much appreciated x

I've never been in August. In September I don't remember many at all though.
However, wasps are a fact of life in the season of ripening grapes and the population is affected by the winterweather - colder, less wasps survive.
I think you have to live with them. Stay away from grassy areas and grape vine areas and make yourself look unattractive (but I don't know how you do that). I certainly haven't been bothered by them here (Hey fancy that, I said "Here" because that's where I am right now!).

We always go in July & wasps have not been a problem the last few years but I've only been stung once by a wasp & it was on Kolios beach. Had trouble sitting down for a few days as it got me on my bum!!

ive got a bit of an obsession about sea urchins, theres alot in thassos and after seeing someone with loads of spines in his foot im always looking out for them. i tend to wear sea shoes even when sandy and clear water. though to be fair never seen one in skiathos, but someone gave me sea urchin eggs to try on skopelos and they were nice.

thanks for the replies. I suppose it's a case of taking a chance. As I said, a few wasps here and there don't bother us but they were everywhere in Agios Georgios Corfu when we were there. Mosquitoes, although horrible, tend to be a bit easier to cope with as they don't land on your food in 'gangs' lol.
We are still on track for a visit next August.

Google "wasp zapper" for a great little gadget, like a small tennis racket. It is battery powered and makes short work of any troublesome wasps. Take care with sweet drinks. The daughter of a friend of mine was badly stung in the mouth after drinking a can of cola without noticing that a wasp had crawled into the can when she wasn't looking. Bob

Well, Bob, the sticky shower thing you recommended has actually stuck and actually works, so I suppose playing tennis with wasps for balls could be feasible. As a practicing coward, I'll give it a miss though!

I'm glad to hear that you are able to shower Dennis as, I'm sure, are the other guest staying there! Thinking back to your video of driving in the rain, I think that you are doing yourself a dis-service branding yourself a practicing coward! No coward would have driven in these conditions! Bob

Talking of the shower suction thingy... the ball head part, is it supposed to swivel around, cos ours is as stiff as can be?... Hubby managed to lubricate it with washing up liquid, moved a little bit but we darent tug too hard as fear of breaking it?

Yes Di. There are three parts to it.
The flat sucking bit - which is worked by. ...
The middle stem thing, which screws in and out - and I think makes the sucking bit suck.
The ball head thing. It does swivel, but only if you have the nerve to use enough force to swivel it. Ours now swivels easily once it's all stuck on the tile.
I didn't remove the protective film from the rubber sucking bit until we got out here, wanted to keep it clean. But once stuck to the tiles, it behaved nicely.
Hint - beware how you mount and point it. I put ours on facing us at first and it squirted all over the floor. Now I have it mounted on the side and pointing downwards.

Yes, I agree with what Dennis has said. The ball part is meant to be stiff/tight so that when you angle the shower head the way you want it, it stays that way. When you place the pad against a smooth tile turn the nut part as tight as you can to get good suction. Bob

Correction to my previous post. My ball head thing is NOT swivelling (checked in the shower this afternoon).
When tightening up the centre stem, I didn't have the nerve to tighten it as much as Bob suggests, because whenever I do that with plastic screw things, I overdo it and trash the thread (hence our toilet seat is a challenge!!!)
It seems the swivelling on ours is simply the centre stem turning a bit, but I only turn it a fraction (quarter turn, perhaps) to adjust the direction of squirt.
So anyway, I checked your arrival details and it seems likely that you are in room 6 - middle floor, one short flight of steps up, next door but one to us in 8. That might change if other bookings have priority needs which require room swapping.

How do you know all this Dennis, have you asked Angela?... I did hope for a top floor as I had asked her...

I didn't ask, but mentioned that somebody is coming next Tuesday who uses the same website as I and she offered to look it up, same end result! The allocation of rooms is very much subject to any specifics issued by Thomson and also the way things work out with two changeover days and lengths of bookings - your (and my) room was decided by all the preceding bookings so far this season.
For what it's worth, I was promised a ground floor one but ended up on the second floor. As there is a hill horizon across the valley, I'm sure you'll find the view just as good. I shall try to make sure we are still miles away in our hired Jimny when you arrive so that you can't give me a slap!
