Skiathos isn't on the cards, but for reasons I won't go into I have the chance of 10 days in Crete next April (end of the month).
Heraklion, centre north coast.
TUI SENSATORI Resort Atlantica Caldera Palace.
Comments? Experience? Advise?
Cheers.

If I was staying in Heraklion and attempting the Samaria Gorge I'd probably think about staying overnight on south side of island and coming back the following day, it would be a very long day otherwise. I stayed in western Crete a few years ago and hired a jeep to do a much shorter gorge walk than Samaria but still on south side of the island. I only walked the gorge in one direction and then got a boat back to where I started and I was still knackered by the time I'd driven back to the resort I was staying in. I guess if you do it as a tour then a driver takes care of that part and you could sleep on the bus back. I like the freedom of setting my own agenda.

It is many years ago that I walked Samaria. The trip bus took us to the top and we walked down it and were picked up by boat at the bottom. It was before I became an Elderly, I had lungs and legs and enjoyed it. Too long ago to remember how easy or otherwise it was, but I think it must have been easy enough in those days - must have been at least 30 years ago.

Sounds good - went to a Sensatori in Halkidiki this year and it was lovely. I think they're probably a safe bet for AI. Heraklion airport was awful - worst I've ever experienced (departures).

What are the 'house' lager and wine like? Mythos? If not, was Mythos available?
What are the charges like for things not included in the AI deal? In some places you just pay a supplement, whilst in others you pay full price - which is it in these hotels?
Cheers.

The lager and house wine were both very drinkable, but didn't notice any Mythos. Paul prefers Fix Dark, if available, but I'm guessing they didn't have it, or he would've sniffed it out! Cocktails were of excellent quality and strength - all freshly made. I didn't see anyone use actual money, so I assume it all goes on your room and you settle up at the end - but I could be wrong!! There were drinks menus with the prices of excluded AI drinks on, though. Room service was free, too.
We thought it was good value, though a totally different experience to Skiathos. We were there for seven days and (apart from walks along the beach) didn't leave the hotel all week as there was absolutely nothing around it - olive farms and a few scattered houses. It was a good break, but we were happy to get back to Skiathos in September!

So the more premium stuff, not included in the AI deal, do you just pay a supplement for that, or the full price?

We stayed on an AI complex this year in Kardamena; Kos. Everything was included apart from parasailing. Food although a tad on the repetitive side was really very good. Beer and wine was local to the island but more than drinkable. If cocktails are you're thing which they are in Liz's case they were very good. The only negative was if you did want to visit anywhere different most AI complex's on Kos are 5 - 10 KM away from inhabited areas which meant a 10 Euro taxi ride, but that's not a major issue.

YM you will not get Mythos on an all inclusive complex. It'll be Greek branded larger that you haven't heard of on your Skiathos jaunts, but it's more than drinkable. You pay your money and take your chance is my outlook on life. May 2018 we paid our money and had a hell of a holiday. Just go and enjoy the Greek hospitality; its the same on any island I've been too, so stop fretting. We've family members who love Crete, just stay away from Malia.

Thanks.
But that’s not the question I was still wondering about.

Ok YM just had a full read of the post. Beer was local so not a premium beer. Metaxa was included as was premium, although Greek Gin and Vodka. Basically anything the Greeks produce is included. I personally think it would be rather irrational of us to expect international spirits and top Greek beers to be included with AI. We'd never done AI before what is soon to be last year but you should see the size of these places, they are massive. They'd go under within a year offering premium drinks. Everybody's holiday expectations vary but we have to be realistic.
