What a wonderfully balanced discussion, plus and minus points on both sides of the argument. I personally would rather see properties that have fallen into disrepair be bought and renovated, I wonder if recent financial problems within Greece restrict islanders ability to do this. More houses for rental is my personal preference to more large hotel developments.

From looking at various property sites I think the real shortage is long term rentals. The advice for those thinking of a long term or permanent move to the island was 'rent for a year first and see how you go' but the lack of long term rentals has made this completely unrealistic.

I don’t think I could ever ‘live’ on Skiathos. My language skills are abysmal, and I love Yorkshire.
But I could very easily see myself owning a property and spending several months a year there.
Given the money, obviously.

Sorry for digging up this old thread. Still dreaming. And Me Julie appears to have caught the Skiathos bug. We've actually discussed this as a possibility. Lottery wins aside, you can get a little townhouse of £100k, give or take. We'll be downsizing when we retire, as the kids will be leaving home around then - we're 55, and our (not so) little girl has just turned 13. As we're intending to go at 60-62, that dovetails nicely. The money we get from downsizing, + some other bits & pieces make it a genuine possibility. Balddave mention Plakes. We walked through there in August. We got off at Bus Stop 4, as usual. We usually hang a right, then follow the road down the hill on the left. But this time, instead, we kept going until we pretty much hit the shore before turning left, and wandered aimlessly through Plakes, before magically coming out just a street away from Grivisi, which is where we were going. A lovely part of the island, spoiled only by the occasional smell of cat poo. Still dreaming of this with the Lottery win, though: wp.skiathosproperty.com/property/5-bedroom-luxury-villa-with-pool-and-outstanding-views/

Julie, who me and a mate took out for a couple of meals when she was on her first solo visit in 2012, has recently moved to Skiathos permanently after getting married on the island in 2015 so it will be interesting to hear how she and Graham (plus dogs and cats) get on being there all the time. I don't think I'd do it permanently, I'd be more likely to do as YM and downsize, keep somewhere small in UK and try to find somewhere equally small on the island then commute back and forth at will. I'd probably go for somewhere on outskirts of town.

I wouldn’t want to retire to the island. That infers living there on a pension and I think any pension isn’t enough. So I’ll continue wishing for a lottery win. Then I’d take up residence in a hotel there - one which stays open year round, preferably find more than one year round hotel and move occasionally.
As a retiree, I’d have too much concern - about extra costs and keeping the pension going (am I right in thinking pensioners living abroad suffer some disadvantages?). And medical. At my age I must surely be fast approaching the day I shall need some help and I wonder what size pension will cover that? Skiathian had to start a Just Giving page when his wife developed cancer so that they could go back to UK for treatment.
So lottery it is and hotels to evade the hassles of maintaining a property. I have an ambition to swim in the sea every day all year round - with my Big Girl’s Blouse history I doubt if I can keep that up!
So, I’ve done the lottery for over 20 years. I stopped when we went on self isolation back in March, out of spite because I’d achieved a grand record top win of £40 in all that time. I tried again a couple of weeks ago, using lucky dips instead of the same numbers I used for the preceding years. And I’ve had three wins - two of £30 and one of £140. So watch this space and Skiathos Arrivals!!!

i think before any move i would rent for a year to see what it was like out of season, and how i coped with the language and officialdom. i really think with all the documents you need to stamp annually and pay at offices/bank you would without being fairly fluent. Health is a big issue everyone moans , well used to about health service but i wouldnt swap it for anywhere in the world. As i get older ive noticed a few creaks and aches a, i thought i would sail through life without a twinge, ive been very lucky so far. But the odds increase with every year. Also i would want access to year round flights. We also love the mainland peleponnese. theres flights from kalamata all year, athens only 3 hour drive and a good hospital in kalamata 80 mins away. Probably why quite alot of ex pats settled in mountain villages in the area , but you do need to be able to drive.I think spending every april to october in greece would be great comprimise

Here's one for Dennis's lottery win but you need a car, though if you can afford this then a few taxi fares probably arent going to break you.
The villa itself looks really nice but for that money I'd expect a better pool and probably another bedroom to be honest.

No thanks Kev, just doesn’t click for me. Although it looks nice at first glance it’s something of a mishmash. And it doesn’t need a bigger pool - it hasn’t got one (what you see is a fizzer thing and the blurb says “room to install a pool”).

My first thought was that it did look a lot of money for what was there but think it's partly about land, there's a lot of 'garden' associated with it that nudges the prices up which probably wouldnt be high on the list of requirements for most retirees. I'd settle for a 2 bed townhouse on the outskirts (but walkable into) town and not really miss the jacuzzi ;-)

Oh, I’d want a jacuzzi. Next door’s have one and they get in it with wine and throw a ball for the dog. Bit decadent and he wears a thong with a belly somewhat older than decent. And hides the thong. Which he also wears in the local swimming pool (I am reliably informed).
But it didn’t have a bidet.
