I may have a window for a very quick Skiathos break. If it happens it'll almost certainly be the last week in August, one week only, just me.
I need to keep it cheap.
Any ideas? Best bet DIY, or package.
Now, here is an outside chance of something quite different, and that's the last week in October (so Saturday 26th Oct to Sunday 3rd November).
Will anything be open? Weather?

Some places will be closed or on their last week end of October and the weather will be less predictable, but you will get a good deal. The August date will be better weather-wise but the prices will be higher. Assuming you mean flying out on Aug 24th and returning Aug 30th you'll be looking at around the £350 mark for a return flight. Cheapest package I've seen available if booked now for that week was around the £650 mark. You could probably do flight+hotel separate for a bit less than the package price if you weren't fussy about where to stay (eg no pool etc, just a room somewhere). You can save a lot by going the week after in August (30th - Sep 6th), there are packages available for that week from around £550.

I’d love to be able to take advantage of that, but I’m currently stuck to school holidays.
Who knows, though.

Cheapest I found for 1 week accommodation only for Aug 24th-30th was £309 so adding to the £350 flight it's no cheaper than a package.

Cheers.
Okay, here's the story. I'm now almost certainly going to be made redundant at the end of this term. It's all been agreed, I just need to see the formal paperwork.
Meanwhile, SWMBO has had the offer of a week's holiday with a mate from work in a month's time, so I've told her to take it. She says I can reciprocate. The person her mate is going with has pulled out, and she doesn't want to go on her own, and it's only around £500. So much cheaper when you're not paying for a family of four!
If (as I hope) I get another job pretty quickly, it should be in education, so if I take a holiday it'll be the last week in August.
The only other possibility is if I don't get a job, and do a spell of supply teaching. This'll leave me free to go when I like, and I wouldn't feel too bad being unavailable for work, as there's not a lot of illness absence just after the summer break. Chances are I'd be sat all week waiting for the supply agency to ring, with no call forthcoming.
Tui have the Palace for c.£750, which includes breakfast. I thought I could keep it cheap by eating at Under the Pine Tree every night.

If you like Koukounaries but don't fancy the hike up the hill to the Palace every day there's a deal for the Golden Beach which is down the other end of Kouk. £681 for 7 nights b&b Aug 23-30th, from Manchester. If you fancied staying in town the Morfo hotel (no pool here) is available Aug 23-30th for £677 7 nights b&b. These are through Loveholidays which tend to have some of the cheapest deals in peak season from past experience.

By the time I come to book, if that time ever comes at all, I have no doubt all the deals available today will be gone. Maybe some late cancellations will come up. If it comes down to me being on supply, I might make the decision vert last minute.
I didn't mind the walk to and from the Palace when I was last there. Breaks things up a bit. And I think most accommodation at Koukounaries itself is on the 'wrong side of the lake', which you still have to negotiate. Beach-wise, I prefer Maratha anyway.

Fair enough, The Palace is a big hotel so there may be cancellations or some other reason for a deal to come up at short notice, fingers crossed you get something closer to the time. I don't arrive on Skiathos until Aug 30th, the previous week is my island hopping venture (Athens-Skyros-Alonissos-Skopelos).

We’ve recently booked a late holiday with Love Holidays, Yorkshiremouth. It’s self catering at the Lakes in Koukounaries for two weeks - £811 for us both. Alternatively, if you can get a cheap flight the Atlas hotel in town is very reasonable.
Incidentally, last time you stayed at the Palace was there a footpath all the way down into Koukounaries? There is now - looks new. In fact, there seems to be a footpath all along the main road to town now. I walked along part of it from bus stop 10 to 8 yesterday and there were discarded spacers ( like the ones tilers use) scattered on the walls in places. Big improvements!
Good luck with your holiday booking 😎

No footpaths on the side of the road, and I'd still have taken the shortcut anyway, I suppose.
Great news if they've put a footpath along all of the bus route road. I'll look out for that in any future 'drive from Koukounaries to Town' videos.

youngster !, i'm a gran but i'm flattered Dennis . I'm sad to say i'm awake most days 5-5-30 ish even on holiday. I love early morning walks around the town seeing it come to life, the youngsters from the club strip just walking home arm in arm and usually very sober unlike our country, the workman enjoying their first coffee of the day, pap street not crowded , bliss.

Gran indeed! I'd have been eligible to be a great grumpy grampy many years ago (sadly, I'm a grumpy not great grumpy grampy because I'd have loved to be a great grumpy grampy ages ago - modern technology has a lot to answer for!).

Hi YM, not sure what your budget is for a cheap week in Skiathos in August but I thought I would check out via TUI and TC. I have found that travelling solo is never 'cheap' compared to travelling as a couple. TUI from Manchester on 23 August via their 'deals' offering ranges from £828 - £3,126 and TC from Manchester on 25 August (nothing for 23rd) ranges from £639 - £2,715. Most of these are S/C and at various resorts on the island. Did not look fully into any of these offers for any possible 'add ons' though.
PS: just looked at your blog, enjoyed reading your thoughts and others' reactions to your impending retirement. Three months and counting to my retirement! 🎂🍾😄
