Cheers.
In a few months I'm hoping everything with the job is sorted, and I can say something more about it.
Yes, those going single get stung. The TUI week at the Palace is £773 for one person, but just £530 each if there are two of you.

Yes, but you have to consider the single traveler is most likely to occupy a double room, thereby denying the accommodation owner the profit from two people. Naturally, that excuse also covers the extortionate extra they charge, but there is some truth in it.

This could spark a nice debate Dennis.
Firstly, I think you would, as a solo traveller, be hard pushed to find single rooms available in the majority of holiday accommodation as they are a rarity but if you do, a solo traveller will pay more per capita for the single room than two people for a double room.
Secondly, it has been my experience that accommodation owners actually sell their rooms per night and not per person per night. TOs pay the owners per night and charge the traveller per person per night. So a solo traveller is not denying any profit to the accommodation owner the TO is.
Just my opinion. 😃

Just an update on my post about footpaths. Went from town to Koukounaries tonight and there are still some stretches of road without a footpath, unfortunately. I think they’re doing the most populated areas first, so hopefully all the road will be covered eventually.
Although from the Palace to Koukounaries is now ok (and there were plenty walking it) from the Palace back towards Troulos still has no safe area to walk.

Amy, in MY experience, TOs pay the owner per head per night. And a ridiculously low rate too. I’ve never travelled solo except on flight only, so my guesswork says solo on a package pays an under-occupancy supplement. Which I have assumed on the per head per night doesn’t get passed on to the owner.
The ONLY evidence I have in support of this is simply that owners tell me they get X Euros per person per night. When no guests are booked in an empty week, the owner gets nothing by way of retainer for keeping the accommodation for the TO exclusively.
For example, owner contracts to provide accommodation from 1st May to 15th October, but very few are actually occupied first and last weeks of the season. And the owner gets zilch for them.

Sorry to perpetuate it, but I’ve just recalled the problem this creates when TOs offer different flight days. Guests arrive Monday’s, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Room occupied Friday week, but next week guests arrive Wednesday. Owner gets nothing for Saturday to Tuesday.

I think the reason I got a reasonable deal at Morfo for this year is that they appear to have a genuine single room which, as has been pointed out, is relatively rare. I think all the others I've booked as part of the 'expedition' are typical twin rooms and even just booking them on a nightly basis can be a bit pricey when you are not sharing the cost with another traveller. I've kept it down to around £30 per night in most places but the difficult one was Skyros where I've ended up paying about £180 for 3 nights!

I know this is a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question, but what’s the going rate for a return flight to Skiathos, peak and out of season?

The 'season' is effectively defined by when direct flights operate so true out of season direct flights don't exist, you would have to go via Athens. There are some really cheap returns right at each end of the season depending where you go from, cheapest usually Gatwick so you have factor in the cost/incinvenience getting to and from there. I've sen occasional deals come up for well under £200 return but at peak season from a provincial airport you are looking at £350 and above for returns.

So out of season I should budget for £200, but might get cheaper, and at peak times allow £350-£400 or so?

Plus a few bob to get to Gatwick from God’s Own County. We usually fly from Manchester.

That's what I was trying to say, you will see flights at peak season cheaper from Gatwick than Manchester but you have to work out if the difference is worth it once you deduct cost and inconvenience of getting to and from cheapest compared to your local airport (Manchester for you). Quick online search this morning actually came up with Luton as cheapest but these will vary as more people make more bookings :
For the period Aug 23rd - Aug 30th
Manchester : £389 return (TC) Luton International : £305 return (Tui) Gatwick : £359
