It's an old trick, Tre. Stand next to a fat person and I look thin.

Re going via Athens, lots of people do it and it's feasible but you mainly have to take into consideration how easy is it for you to get to an airport that flies to Athens and what are the flight times, ie will you miss a night on Skiathos one or both ways because you arrive in Athens too late for a connectiong flight to Skiathos. If I was within easy distance of an airport that flew direct to Athens and then on to Skiathos at a fraction of the price of direct flights to Skiathos and I was going for 2 weeks or more I would definitely look into it. I'll be able to give some sort of account of negotiating Athens airport when I do my 'round the houses' trip next month. The savings would have to be significant though, I wouldnt do it that way for a net saving of say £50.

Kev, I shall be looking forward to reading your report on navigating Athens airport, hopefully pick up a few useful tips, We have been visiting Skiathos for over 20 years, and every year we say ‘ we’ll nip over to Athens for a couple of days ‘ , but have always been to comfortable once arriving so it’s never happened. Just be chance my wife was talking to a Greek work colleague about it, and by pure coincidence his sister owns a letting apartment right in the centre with views over the city, seemed too good an opportunity, all booked for 4 nights next May, booked on the outgoing trip so we can have a few busy days taking in as much as possible, then relax on our arrival to Skiathos.

Monday Set off 10ish & walked to Xanemos Beach. In May this would have be been a lovely walk but July? The heat! Started to get concerned that we’d get there & no sunbeds. 😅 There were only 2 other people. Happily settled on a sunbed & at 11:30 broke the no alcohol before 12 rule. The Mythos went down well.
Last year I walked from town to Xanemos, across to Mega Gialos, scrambled down to the beach itelf and back up, over to Mega Gialos taverna for a late lunch and then walked back into town from there. In late August. I was definitely ready for another mythos by the time I got back though...

Kev, I shall be looking forward to reading your report on navigating Athens airport, hopefully pick up a few useful tips. Unfortunately the airport is about as much as I'm going to see of Athens If I was a bit younger there would have been a huge temptation to have a night out in Athens but I could see me missing the 0700 flight next morning so I've resisted temptation and booked a room only 10 min drive from the airport (Sparta area, near the zoo). I will have been up since 3am on the Friday anyway to get a coach all the way from Nottm to Heathrow, get to Athens about 7pm local time so I think all I will want is an early night. I'm going to try to negotiate if the b&b owner might be able to pick me up as I've heard from more than one source that Athens taxi drivers are notorious for ripping off tourists from the airport. If you are having a few nights there Dave there are some tips on areas and bars to avoid here :
On another note, if this year is typical then those looking to travel via Athens might be best booking flights early. I thought I would just check how much it would cost if I booked my flight from Heathrow now. When I booked it last year my one way ticket was £110, it is now £289 for the same flight with the same options !
