Reminds me what a relative newbie I still am, I don't think I'd even heard of Skiathos in 2006/7. Think I'd done Corfu, Rhodes, Zante and Cyprus by then but that was all as far as Greek related hols were concerned.

I think my first visit to skiathos was about 19 years ago, we had a boat and kouk beach was lovely not crowdwd not all those hideous fixed umbrellas, we've stayed at esperides, always had a studio since prefer it. You could move the sunbeds round on the beach then too, the taverna had a nice baked mud floor much preferred it then. I did the skopelos, Alonissos boat trip then pre mamma mia, the final steps was then a lovely little taverna with fabulous view in the daytime over the town you could watch the ferries and planes coming in. I didnt come back for several years as busy seeing lots of other greek islands. I dont think i would have thought of Skiathos if a friend hadnt been and recommended it

Our first time was 2004 and we had never even heard of Skiathos, but a travel agent friend told Paul we would like it. We stayed in Koukounaries and found Ambelakia beach in the first couple of days .... our Paradise.
In 2003 we had been to Corfu and weren’t very keen, so we were quite surprised how much we loved Skiathos and have only missed one year since, often going twice a year. The year we missed was 2009 when our youngest got married in Guadalajara, Mexico - rather an expensive year!

I can identify with this 😄 Our first Skiathos holiday (2000) was to Koukanaries, an apartment beside/behind the Caravos hotel - I think it’s now a private residence. We loved it. The 2 weeks seemed to last forever and we discovered Ambelakia beach on Day 3 or 4 - we called it our beach 😄 We bombed around on a moped (chicken chaser as we called it) to a lot of beaches but kept coming back to ‘our beach’. It was my other half’s very first foreign holiday and no matter where we go in the world, it is compared to Skiathos. Ambelakia is not the same anymore and things change but we still love our Skiathos holidays.

Interesting how many of us have started out at Kouk. My first 2 visits (first solo, second with a drinking mate) were Koukounaries. In fact my first taste of the island was the Caravos! I was wary as it had some iffy reviews but I was fine with it, it was cheap at the time. I also walked through the old ruined hotel and down the steps to Ambelakia. I have since seemed to work my way across the island. Third visit was Troulos, then dad passed away and I suggested it to mum as they had never visited while he was alive so I took her to Megali Ammos 3 years ago and last year (later this year too) we were in town but in different hotels.

So think I’m the NEWBIE here. Sure I’ve told this tale before..... 2010. Son visits a tiny Greek island with his girlfriend & her parents. As they were due to return, airline went bust. They were advised they had to pay CASH to get a flight home. Me “Use a cash point in the airport I’ll transfer you some funds” Son “There isn’t a cash point” Me “ There has to be” .......... 2011 Son “ I’ve decided to propose when we go back to Skiathos with girlfriend & her parents. It’s a really special place” Me “ Really.... Well we’re coming too” Son “You’ll not like it Mum, it’s not what you’re used to. It’s really basic “ ..... Theodora was really basic that year but I still loved it. I was in charge of “the ring” on the journey & felt more than proud. The Proposal was in the gardens with celebratory meal at Infinity Blue. The wedding followed in 2016. 13 visits later This island still has the magic

I'm def the newbie... We always went to Majorca, loved it then my sis tried Skiathos, told me we would love it, as we had got her into Majorca too and she knew what I/we liked, but we went to Zante with friends for our first Greek visit, it was ok.... so, the year after, we booked Skiathos in 2014 and been back ever since, apart from sadly this year, but back next year!

I only beat you by 2 years Di and I didn't visit at all in 2014 or 2016. It makes me at some of the folks that post on TA wanting to be 'big fish in small ponds' that have lived on the island since the 90's when there are people like Geoff Baldry who's been there since the very early 70's ! The changes he's seen are immense. I'm slowly working my way through his book 'Lucky To Be Here'.

I think my first visit may have been 2015 but I had known about the island for a number of years as my brother had been visiting once, sometimes twice a year since around 2005 and someone else I knew had been three years running before my first trip. I wanted to find out for myself what was so great about the island to have people coming back year after year but as I did not know whether I would come back a second time, I twinned the visit with skopelos! I remember finding this website and reading the feedback from different people and sending Dennis a PM asking if he thought it would be ok me posting a diary of my trip to both islands! I had never done anything like that before and didnt want to upset anyone or embarrass myself.
The rest, as the saying goes, is history. 😃
