In the matter of this thread. We pay little attention to these recommendations because we’re odd, I suppose. At our age we have developed an unwillingness to get it wrong. We pretty much went to Skiathos 7 years ago when Corfu went badly sour on us and Skiathos was based on semi secondhand information. It turned up trumps - our first week (of a fortnight) was perfect, accommodation, Greeks, location, all three satisfied all the adjectives necessary. So when we are asked why don’t we try somewhere else we just aren’t interested, we know where the holiday will be a success. The same applies to tavernas. But we HAVE been a bit adventurous, with the result that we have tried four which don’t make it on our list. One was a shock when the bill came. Two where the food we chose wasn’t any good (other people actually rave about them so it was our fault). One inaccessible except by car. There is also a fifth which we avoid with a shudder on looks and smell. So here are my top four evening meals. Ratatouille, Jasteri, Vareli and Sunrise, all walking distance for us in Troulos. In town, Nikos (yellow) for gyros and occasional evening meal when we get off the boat and up opposite Tries Hierarches church the little sandwich place. And the Bourtzi, obviously. the one avoided wouldn't be owned by a captain by any chance dennis

I don’t know the owner, but it is NOT the one called Captain Nikos (behind Jasteri).

Ricci e Poveri up the steps and round the corner if you go past OBatis with the tables on your left and the spit on your right. It's Mediterranean tapas rather than trad Greek but I've yet to read a convincing poor review of it. A new one in town for me last year was Marmita. Bit pricier than some but the food was excellent. It's tricky to find though.

Kev, did you know that the owners of R&P have opened up a new (larger) restaurant where the Mediterrano used to be? Fabulous views overlooking the steps and the Old Port. I can’t remember the name, but want to try it on my next visit ... in 10 DAYS TIME!!!! Sorry for the caps, but I’m a little excited 🥳

No, I don't recall reading about a new one. I will have to investigate next year (hopefully) but please pass on your first impression either here or FB if you do visit. I may have it wrong but I'm sure I saw somewhere that there was a connection between one of the R&P people and the Chinese place Zen on the front. Zen didn't open at all last year so maybe this is a new alternate project to that. Anyone reported on Zen this year? Maybe it's gone completely now.

Another in town I forgot about, Mesogia. One that had been on my to do list for a year or two but hadn't got round to until last year. No nonsense trad Greek food on a quiet backstreet in the upper West regions of town, next door to Gravis Pizza. Nice service and sensibly priced home made food, though the lady who runs it is South African I think.

IT appears taverna opening hours are to be restricted from 7am to 11pm, this will have an impact on some of portside bars and nightclubs

Also forgot about Kalivi in Troulos but I think its closed down now, only ate there once but it was a nice homely little place.

Also worth trying is Akrogiali which is the last of the restaurants on the strip before the clubs. Always lots of locals eating there and the fresh fish is fab, as are the views back across to the harbour. Thumbs up from us for Kabourelias too. We like Agnadio just outside Town. TBH we've rarely had a bad meal in 30 years and still have places to try. Anatoli just outside town gets excellent reviews but not sure if it's open this year - if so hope it stays open until we get there on 9th September! Mesogia is lovely and worth a trek up through the town.

Ian has posted that 7-11 opening times have come into play, and certain late bars have already shut for the season, we’re early birds nowadays so doesn’t really bother us. i must now edit and admit being foolish by listening to information posted by a normally reliable source, some Greek island subject to curfew, however Skiathos not on the list, this makes me guilty of one of my pet hates, posting misinformation. i apologise most sincerely.

It would be (you know it's busy if three tables are occupied).
Yes Kalivi. The father died and the two sons took over, mother (I think) still cooking. Wonderful home cooked and portions for farmers - moussaka for two was served to one person, everything else the same! Sadly, the boys fell out over the running of it - I think one wasn't interested and went off abroad and wanted the remainer to buy him out. I think it closed in September 2018 - we certainly were disappointed not to get there last year
