This trip, it looks like we may be renting a car for a couple of days.
We’ll be using it to go to Kastro, the monastery, Platanos.
Whilst I have a very basic knowledge of the island, and where they are, I don’t feel I could take us straight there.
We have sat nav/Google Maps & directions on our phones.
Are these adequate/suitable on Skiathos?

I first used the maps you get free in the airport. They are a reasonable approximation, but on more than one occasion I found my ability to achieve a seventeen point turn on a narrow steep edged unsurfaced track was sorely tested. Nowadays I occasionally fire up Maps on my iPhone. I once took a TomTom. None of them are perfect. Best advice is that you can’t get seriously lost on an island that small.

Still never got round to car hire, keep meaning to do it then run out of time. If I do a full 2 weeks some time I'll probably have a car one day. I've got a detailed map but it's deceptive, you can get lulled into thinking a path might be doable by car but in reality it's just a hiking route.

There are also a couple of places where straight ahead, the more obvious, logical route, leads to somebody’s entrance gate. I have often found Google satellite view more helpful than the road map view.
I think you’ll need 4G connection - Vodafone.gr has incredible speeds. I have a Vodafone contract with free roaming data, so nowadays I never bother with the free WiFi on offer in various tavernas and accommodation. I always use FaceTime when we are in the mountains/hills so that I can show people live views as we drive. I tether iPads and MacBook to my iPhone for performance similar to my broadband at home.

I think weve discussed it before but it's about time Google did a drive round the island to cover at least some of it on Street View even if it's just the easier access roads.

We find the maps at the airport pretty decent. Well much better than the ones 20 odd yrs ago. It was more "does this squiggle on the map look to be as squiggly as the road" 🤣 Some fab news tho... My dad has swapped our yaris to a jeep "woohoo" I think he was put off with the amt or reversing back up unsuitable roads last year.

Steph, that’s a great result. Have a brilliant time with a jeep.

Kev and YM Street View would be good, although previous discussions I think concluded that it would probably be difficult.
And by the way, recently there’s been a change resulting in Street View no longer working on iPad and iPhone - a total disaster for me, as I use it for most of my deliveries. Correction. I used to use it for most of my deliveries.

Up to last September I'd never been in Phedrock bar before.
I found myself the the town centre, and brought it up on my iPhone on Google Maps.
Well, I found it eventually, but it wasn't very accurate as to my location - it regularly had me in the middle of a building when I was on the street.
I'm not looking forward to re-finding Mesogia & Gravisi.

The only place I know which is accurately marked on Google Maps is Villa Maria, which I found by using satellite view and their swimming pool.
Most useful satnavs I’ve found have been people - a few words of Greek, a few words of English. Follow directions, then ask again. Just in passing, I have yet to find Alexandra’s Taverna in town - apparently everybody knows it and where it is, so it’s fortunate that I’m not feeling a great urge to visit it. Oh, and I found the town hall by looking at an awful lot of buildings! ( but I really wanted to find the Town Hall).

PS This thread has persuaded me to install TomTom GO app on my iPhone. It’s only £12.99 a year subscription and it’ll accept GPS coordinates in place of road and street names. And in any event it locks your location to the road you are on, which could help a lot on the unsurfaced roads/tracks.

I don't know if it's Android only but I downloaded a free app called HERE WeGo which was pretty good at pointing me at slightly obscure places in town when I was on foot. You would think every app would work from same GPS tags for places but maybe not.

We can look for somewhere for ages without finding it, and if I then ask someone she'll say "Why are you asking them?"
