Whats peoples thoughts on new lockdown, can we realistically see travel this summer?
I think a total travel ban should be implemented at the moment and all those idiots in the carribbean made to stay there.
As i get ready to go into the office at the hospital, where social distancing impossible, i have to handle medical notes touched by lots people, handwash often run out in the toilets, likewise paper towels.
i am staggered to see lots of facemasks thrown on the floor in the staff carparks and outside main entrances. The managers working safely from home sending us endless e mails about do this do that.
Meanwhile the public who should be at home can go to garden centres and buy the useless tat most sell beside garden stuff. You couldnt make it up.
I see trouble ahead as thousands carry on defying rules.

I’ve been mulling over what it will take forever Greece to open. I’m not sure vaccinations over here will matter much. We’re not vaccinating anyone under 16, and if all families with kids weren’t allowed, that’s a massive chunk of their tourist industry gone. I think it’ll be down to how fast the Greeks vaccinate. At an extreme, if their vulnerable population is safe, it really doesn’t matter if we’re swimming in Covid. But getting our numbers under control will obviously help. I’ve been keeping an eye on vaccination news from Greece, and most of their vulnerable population should be vaccinated before the start of the season, if things go to plan. Cariad, how right you are. But I was astounded last week - Vera had an X-Ray appointment, following her fall back in April which wasn't X-Rayed and is still giving her trouble. I saw so many hospital staff walking round in pairs, not separating, not even attempting to keep 2 metres apart, all in an environment where there must be more Covid things floating around than anywhere. I couldn't get us out quickly enough - fortunately there were so few people in Radiology that she was seen and photographed within half an hour of parking, (so it only cost me £3). That's the hospital where Vera's daughter caught it as a Staff Nurse back in April and still not fit to resume working nursing shifts.
As for idiots - I have to bite my tongue to stop it saying out loud what my brain is shrieking - that I hope they catch it. Wicked of me, but what else can you think? As an elderly, I have long been plagued by waking up every day with some imagined feelings of an illness or condition which will finish me off this week, so I charitably think if they all caught it and died, they would no longer pose an additional threat to me and Vera.
The comments I've heard from Greece are to the effect that many people don't believe in the vaccine, that their Prime Minister was "vaccinated" on TV with plain water to fool them all. I have said to them that it's not true, the vaccine is their life-saver, but they say they'll see.
And yes, the blue disposable masks are the new litter. Yes, we went to our local garden centre just before Christmas to get compost for my beans nd we had to walk through a solid jungle of decorations, baubles, streamers, etc, etc, to get to the gardening stuff. The area for gardening tools was reduced to about 20 x 20 metres, when normally there is a huge selection. And of course, a grotto - socially distanced!!!
Our January Christmas treat for the whole family, weekend at CenterParcs, was re-booked for March. Hoping, but now faintly. Slightly better hope for Skiathos June/July, but much more delay and I think I'm likely to meet the grim reaper before our friends out there.
Meanwhile, I await my text to go for the over 80s vaccination. Sadly, Vera won't get one at the same time as she's still under 80.

Firstly I agree with Cariad that people traveling to the Caribbean etc are selfish/stupid , we know a few people who spent the holidays in Dubai, they seemed proud of the fact they got away with traveling as they put it down as a business trip, I believe numerous celebrities did a similar thing.
With regards to Greek travel this year, to be honest , at this point in time ,who knows. We’re booked to fly to Athens on April 30th then on to Skiathos, I shall be amazed if this trip goes ahead
Let’s hope the government get a proper grip on the vaccination role out , however this is very much governed by the ability to manufacture at a rapid rate.
I would also like to see harder, and well publicised, dealing with those who choose to flout the rules.

The government coming down hard on rule breakers?  The Leader of the House, one Jacob Rees-Mogg, was travelling from his home in tier 3, to a church in tier 4, breaching the rule of not entering a tier 4 area. Because it’s the only church offering a particular type of mass which fits in with his type of Catholic persuasion. Presumably a mass featuring eye tests. EDIT to add - presumably this will no longer be an offence now that everywhere is tier 4. |

i think vera will get vaccine same time as you Dennis because with diabetes she is classed as clinically vunerable. i think i may be offered it earlier than my group because i can get it through work. i see greece
has just tightened rules again extended curfew to 9pm schools closed and still having to text to go to the supermarket.

Good news indeed Cariad. All you have to do now is steer clear of the 50 people who have one infected person among them - that's a frightening number, but I wonder just how many people realise it? They'll walk past 50 people any time they go out!!!

Our daughter had the vaccination last week, she works as a social prescriber for the NHS, she works mainly with adults who have learning difficulties and she will be giving the vaccine to those who reside in sheltered accommodation.
I telephoned my mum this morning, she’s well into her eighties and has diabetes , to date she’s not received a date for the vaccination. She is adamant she’ll only have the Oxford vaccine, she doesn’t trust ‘ that foreign muck’

Cariad, that is great news for you. I think that all nhs staff should be first in line for the vaccine whether they are first line or administration as you are all sharing the same workspace. What I don't understand is the critical bed situation. Did I sleep and they demolished all the Nightingale hospitals specifically built for covid patients or did the Government only build them to put our minds at rest but with no intention of actually putting them to the purpose they were built for?
Dennis and Dave, I think that like all nhs services, it is a lottery based on where you live. I have an aunt and uncle who live in Lancashire. He is 82 and living with cancer. He received the first vaccine shot middle of December, with the second due 3 weeks later. His second shot has been cancelled until further notice. How is that going to work. Meanwhile my aunt, who has just turned 76, received an alert text on Monday, and a confirmed appointment for her first vaccine jab tomorrow. Is that because she lives with someone classed as CEV?
Being classed as CEV myself, in my area I will either fall into level 4 or level 5 of vaccination. The vaccination location is a bus/train ride away. Very worrying. ☹️

I’ve been vaccinated already.
I’ve been working coordinating the vaccine rollout, getting the over 80s in, etc. At the end of a shift just before Christmas there was some left, and they don’t want a single shot to go to waste.

Vaccination in Greece is good news, in fact vaccination anywhere is good news.
Just seen the pictures of the rapid test being available outside the school on papadiamanti Street.
Today’s announcement about the need to test when entering the UK, the details are very vague, doesn’t state if prior to departure from abroad or on arrival in the UK.

Some clarification on test requirements, PCR needed 72 hours before traveling home, I’m struggling to see how Skiathos will be able to facilitate this with thousands traveling each week.
There is also the ongoing cost implications, it’s circa £100 per test in uk for outbound flight, no idea of the cost abroad but for a family a heavy additional sum for their holiday.
It’s easy to understand why this test is being required with different variant of covid emerging.
Let’s just hope once vaccination gets up to speed a good number will have received their first jab by Easter, then hopefully some of the restrictions may be eased.

well ive had mine today, this vaccine can not be given to anyone with serious allergies, on warfarin, or drugs that supress the immune system. 6500 people already vaccinated. Another centre opening next week for the oxford vaccine. ive been given a card with details of the batch number etc which may be useful if we get to travel
