It’s a nightmare at the moment. Usually 10 of us in our dept at the hospital this week 2 so many people with covid or school age children have it so they are isolating. Everyone I know has lots friends relatives with this new strain. Thankfully Symptoms much less severe than delta variant but far more infectious. We have 8 reception staff (front desk, phones, prescriptions). On Tuesday we had one on annual leave, two off with Covid, and two isolating pending tests. Of the three remaining, it was two’s day off, leaving one person. The business manager and I had to step in. I’ve done two 10 hour+ shifts this week. Despite Monday being bank holiday in lieu of NYD, and Wednesday being my ‘day off’, I’ll still have got my full 37 hours in by the end of today. I think (and certainly hope) we just have to grit our teeth and ride out this wave through the rest of the month, and maybe the first week or two in February.

Which perfectly describes the situation with ambulances and A&E (and everwhere beyond, but these two are the noticeable front line). 7 out of 8 missing, input two temps, back to three total reception. So over time, the "fourth" arrival waits his/her turn and whilst waiting, another two arrive, then another two and by the time reception gets to deal with number nine, there are 12 waiting and building.
I have been in the past thinking "What good is it doing, all this voluntary testing?". And I confess, it has only just sunk in - it is so that if you test positive, you don't go out and pass it on. Yes, I know that's logical, but for some reason, I simply haven't logicalated it myself until a couple of days ago. This is the first time I've been thick in 47 years - that's what age does to you.

Vera’s not a member of this forum. But she agrees I’m thick and old and over 47. 😀

Happy new year to all. I am fortunate to have been in Tenerife for the last week, however the pre travel stress was difficult with us half expecting the travel rules to change last minute. An hour after we had taken our 48 hr pre departure test the rules changed, we had paid for day2 pcr tests, again no longer a requirement, we shall however take them for our own piece of mind, this is mainly due to the amount of numpties who thought it was ok not to wear a mask on the flight home. It is confusing at best knowing what tests to pre book before traveling, I wonder how many have purchased tests for the upcoming weeks and no longer require them. An unwarranted expense especially for families.

The sad news is that yesterday I discovered one of my fishes had been eaten whilst we were away. In truth, not entirely eaten, there was a lump about 4” long floating at the side of the pond, so only about two thirds got et. there’s a small gap at one end of the pond, but I would swear nothing could get in, more importantly because there’s an overhanging stone, nothing could get out. Huh! What do I know? Worse, four baby fishes are missing too. #weeping!

Carp? We have watermead park nearby and often see herons sitting on roofs of houses nearby with ponds. It’s like a fat food outlet for them

Well, I now have five fat fish and two small skinny ones.
I'm going to see about moving my animal camera to the pond side to see if anything prowls around there. (My nice new animal camera has recorded at least two different foxes and a zillion cats in the night - unfortunately, at night it only records 10 second bursts, and often starts just as the animal's tail is disappearing out of shot, so this could be a long term exercise!).

If you get into night time animal spotting Dennis there are models where you can set the duration of the videos, usually up to 1min. Can also set a 'wait' time before the camera triggers again so you don't get loads of footage of the same thing. The better ones have better sensors that activate the camera very quickly. Some are hundreds of pounds but in the affordable range I can recommend the Victure HC500 at under £100 : uk.govicture.com/collections/trail-camera/products/victure-hc500-wifi-wildlife-trap-camera-30mp-1296pYou can even download an app and connect to it in real time time via wifi whilst it is in use and see what it is looking at on your phone.
