Welcome to the forum boba. My first time to the Sporades was the last 2 weeks in May. The first week in Skopelos and the second week in Skiathos. The weather was glorious until the last 2 days of the holiday, when it was cold and wet. However, the day after when I was leaving for the airport, the sun was back again. I think that was 2015. You are staying just round the corner from where the bus terminal is located and the timetable will be posted there. I think early season it's every 30 minutes then every 20 when it gets busier. Can't comment on car hire but Dennis will probably respond to that question. Restaurants are plentiful and everyone has their favourites so sure you will get some really good tips. There are some boat trips available and a bus that goes from the terminus to the monestery, not forgetting the dogs home where you can take them out for a walk in the morning. Have a great holiday, I'm sure you will be back. 😄

Welcome, boba, to a forum full of Skiathos lovers - so you will only get keeners commenting here! We’re all in love with the island.
As for car hire, I will just say two things. First, hire a Suzuki Jimny (which is often colloquially called a jeep), because it has facility to engage 4-wheel drive. Some roads (unsurfaced) need it sometimes and quite a few want it in bad weather, when rain makes for slippery surfaces. Secondly, there are several hire places, with some variation of prices, mechanical attributes of vehicles and levels of insurance. Anybody else will recommend their own preferred dealer, I don’t because I simply hire from the office nearest our accommodation so that I’m near if I need assistance. In case of rain, check the condition of the canvas roof - ours always leaks in the back, but we sit in the front so it doesn’t matter! And check the windscreen wipers. It’ll be good if the handbrake works well too.
We normally hire for two or three days on the grounds that the island is so small that after that, you’ll drive the same roads again and again. Some people hire for the whole fortnight and drive to the same beach every day. It takes all sorts and that’s not for us, but it’s the epitop of holidays for others.
Have a look at the forum videos section for some videos. Alternatively you can see several videos from me on Utube as MrDeenoN. (If you can’t find it just say so and I’ll post a link (can’t suss out how to do it from my iphone So it’s on the desktop).

Welcome, Boba. You asked about weather - my advice for May/early June is to be prepared for heat, rain and cooler days too. The great thing about a small island like Skiathos is that wet weather tends to blow through quickly. I've been caught out a few times by a rainy morning and going out in jeans and a long sleeved top only to find it's blazing hot by the afternoon! I'm there from 25 May and will include trainers and a waterproof light jacket, just in case.
Have fun exploring the restaurants - we all have our personal favourites, so I'm wary of recommending. However, the Alkyon is ideally placed for you to try those in town and also along the road to the airport (club strip), where there are some excellent ones to try. One must is to have a drink/meal at Mylos (the windmill set on the water's edge nearer to the airport). It's a great place to watch the planes fly in and is very popular.
One last thing - don't think anyone has mentioned the water taxis that go from the old port to several beaches further along the island and also to Tsougria island. They're great value and a good way to get to the beach more speedily than the bus.
Have a fabulous holiday!
