Opinions?
I know a few have been left head-scratching at the idea of people trying to sneak their favourite U.K. booze onto the island - why not drink the local stuff, etc.
But what about drinking in English bars/pubs?
Have a favourite?
Avoid like the plague?
Discuss.

English bars . My honest opinion, Old port house, good hosts but very clicky , Facebook favourite, enough said. Benbows, ok but not the best layout, bench seats, feels like a working men’s club. phedrocks, Phed Greek/English, certainly not typical Greek , fantastic host but sports based bar, we visit purely because Phed And Hari top blokes

I actually first met Hari at Achladies when he was still a kid. But yes, I suppose it’s why I posted. Why would you go to Greece to visit an English pub.

I suppose its a case of each to his/her own YM. Maybe its comforting to some people that they can have a taste of home in a foreign land. Wouldn't be my choice but as the Frence say, 'viva la difference'. :-)

As Doug and Jeanette would say, it’s not Benidorm!

The only one I'm really familiar with is Old Port House (Dave and Libby are great hosts, everyone welcome not just facebookers) and we don't stay in long, usually a pre or post meal drink if we are eating up that neck of the woods. Never been in Pheds that much, usually only if Nasos is playing an acoustic set and don't think he's played there last couple of years.
Tend to gravitate toward Blind Dog for live music. Danny is English so does this qualify as a 'half English bar'?
Not been in Benbows since it changed hands again, it looked very run down and the service was shocking toward the end of the previous owners tenure but that was a few years back. Maybe should give it another go but as you say the bench arrangement doesn't do it any favours.
The other one that probably should be in the list is King & Queens but I think that is going through a transition now? Not sure I've ever been in though I've walked past it a few times.
Of course there is Agustera in Kouk which isn't run by Brits but very much caters toward them with the full English available in the mornings etc.
I don't really bother about the obsessive 'must only eat/drink Greek in Greece' thing. If I'm in the UK I don't habitually only eat from what is traditionally seen as 'English Cuisine' so I don't feel obliged to do so in Greece. Yes the bulk of my meals are Greek but if I'm in the mood for a pizza one night I'll have one. Just like the Greeks do themselves!

Kev, Agustera is different again, isn’t it.
Not an English pub. Not a traditional taverna.
It’s a holiday bar.
The Greeks, and I mean sway from tourist areas, I wonder where they all eat and drink. Are ‘tavernas’ museum pieces? Do they just have bars and restaurants like in the U.K.?
Like you, I have no issue having a pizza, or whatever, nor with anyone ordering a can of John Smith’s (plenty of those around).
But a specifically themed ‘British Pub’ does feel (to me) just a tad…unusual. I can actually understand it more in terms of ex-pat Brits in the island than tourists.
But yes, each to their own.

Latin scholar Cariad? It took me three goes to get that GCE. They told me I had to get it or I wouldn’t be considered for Oxbridge! Apparently being considered for Oxbridge was the thing 70 years ago.

The ones I find oddest are the Irish themed bars in the middle of some otherwhile far flung and relatively traditional Greek town. They just seem to spring up from nowhere (presumably started by expats at some point in their history) and soldier on. I have to say I don't gravitate toward these kinds of places but if there's some aspect, such as the hosts being ultra friendly, they get ticked off as a place you know will be OK.
I will offend some here I guess but I've had some great Chinese and Indian food while on holidays. The funniest one was with mates in Rhodes some years ago where the restaurant was split with part being Indian and part Chinese. Even back then th enorm was to have pre chilled beer glasses in the freezer. However the big chiller for their glasses wasn't working, just the ice machine so we all got a large Mythos which came with about 10 ice cubes in each one whether we asked for it or not! It's one meal in 7 or 14, it's not going to destabilise Greek culture overnight.
