I wonder if the new bus service will affect people’s choices on this?

Possibly YM, but not mine … I like to stay out late occasionally without one eye on the time. And then half an hour on the bus late at night isn’t ideal either. Koukounaries is perfect for families with children and if I was fortunate enough to have grandchildren I’m sure I would have different ideas. However I’m old-ish & free of ties so will be in town for the foreseeable.
On the subject of buses, though - what a great development! I’ll certainly be making use of them more from now on. I was thinking of hiring a car in September, but may have a re-think now.

Same here, car hire has been oddly absent from any previous trips despite hiring them in Corfu, Rhodes, Zante, Crete, Kefalonia and mainland Greece (Cyprus as well but I don't count that so much as they drive on the left). I thought doing another 2-weeker this year I'd be bound to finally get a car and go up to Ligaries or similar but if there's a bus to Aselinos might just do that instead. Have to wait and see. If there are enough folks interested then car (it will probably be a jeep in fact) hire could still happen if only for a few days.

If you haven’t hired a Jimny before, be aware that “enough folk interested” might find the rear seating a bit tight. But big enough for youngsters and legless adults though.

Having visited Skiathos since the 90s I’m not sure if I like the way the island is heading re tourism. Every year something new, or all inclusive seems to pop up, If any forum members used to visit 20:years ago, you must agree it’s a different vibe now, not saying that’s a bad thing but where will it end .? Back in the 80s McDonald’s tried to open on the island, lasted one season We wish continue visiting, but avoid peak months, and hopefully things will not become To commercialised/ corporate

I’ve noticed a few mini ‘chains’ beginning. The Palace and Alkyon are owned by the same people, as are Olive Thea/Rada/erm…that one in torn near the school, but I’ve not yet seen any sign of any sort of corporate imagine changing them. We’re all nervous of change, and rightly so. It’s only correct to keep an eye on it, but so far I’m just getting the feeling of ‘the same, only a better tidier’.

Yes, hired one in Cyprus nearly 20 years ago. They are a bit snug in the back, we got 2 teenagers in OK but anyone bigger than my mum might be cramped. The alternative would be a normal car but sticking to only the relatively easy access places with decent roads which limits things a little. A big 4x4 (if they are available?) would probably be beyond the budget and a pain to get round tight roads.

There is a larger model which looks perfectly capable of handling any corners. Sorry I can’t tell you its name.

We hired a Daihatsu jeep from Mustang in 2020, as there were 5 adults to fit in. It was fine, if a little squashed at the back. It wasn’t mega money, but I can’t remember how much - sorry.

Cheers folks will bear it in mind for August/September trip. I probably won't hire for more than 3 days anyway, staying in town. Accommodation owner has offered to pick us up from the airport which is nice.
