Nothing to do with Skiathos, so dump me if you wish.
Last night, in a discussion to explain the film Greyhound (which I haven't seen), it became necessary to explain to grandson that during world war 2, aid convoys were sent from America to UK. Threatened by enemy submarines, they were covered by air. But that cover only extended as far as the planes could fly and return from USA and UK, leaving a gap somewhere in the middle of the altantic. Grandson didn't understand that planes couldn't fly all the way across the atlantic - "Does that mean people couldn't fly to America on holiday?". I must sit him down and explain about horse-drawn milk and coal and vegetable carts and phone boxes with buttons A and B. (Etc).

I don’t care if it’s ‘off topic’, that’s a great story.

And here’s another propos. In Taunton Dene services 6am today in the toilets a man was on his knees looking under the doors. He got up and seeing me in my hi-viz jacket asked if anybody had handed in a mobile phone, which being a passing whitevanman I had no idea. As he was still fretting I offered to call the phone. So when I dialled the number, his back pocket rang loud and clear!
In passing, I wonder how many people today can explain the origin of the verb “to dial” a number on a digital keypad?

i misplaced my phone yesterday i asked alexa (on echo dot ) to ring it technology can be great. My grandchildren amazed when i said i had to go to phone box to ring friends who had house phones, and when we got one it was on a party line shared with neighbour. Holidays my dad never had one until he got married, they were lucky if factory had a bus trip to skeggy once a year with your factory, men all wore suits and ladies smart dress and hats. when i passed my driving test at 17 i used to visit my nan had to go to phone box to let mum know i had arrived and ring before leaving. Leicester then had no dual carriageways bo one way systems nightmare now for drivers from out of time. my grandchildren age 12,11 10 love looking at old photos especially of gan gan in army uniform and nana (me) in very mini skirts white boots and long hair to waist .
