Apologies everybody. Kev has it in a nutshell - we’ve been doing our usual boring stuff, not really worthy of a report - bus into town in the mornings, not of shopping for my new dresses and stuff, gyros at Nikos Taverna, then meander to Bourtzi for another refuelling, then back to Troulos, but of pool swimming for me, then out for evening meal, then back for bed. Sorry, dead boring, but we ARE elderlies after all, you can’t expect us to do YM sort of stuff with bangy thumpy accompaniments. Here’s the exciting stuff. On our first full day after arriving, I had an incident as per photo below, my eye area made contact with an object harder than my eye area and next morning this appeared. But it’s not painful and doesn’t interfere with my holiday enjoyment. And it’s an important record - my first ever black eye! Today we started a three day Jimny hire. Drove down to Koukounaries, then along the coast past the beaches whose names you all know and I don’t, first to Aselinos for an ice tea each, then on to Ligaries for Greek salad. Tomorrow the plan is to go to Xanemos (hoping perhaps futilely) that the taverna is open for a cold one), then on up the mountainsides past the monastery for lunch snack at Platanos. For those of you concerned to read financial information, we’ve now eaten out evening meal five times. I can’t remember prices, so I’ll just say that each of the five cost us less than 50 Euros, Sunrise in Troulos was cheapest at about 33 Euros.

Sorry to hear about the black eye Dennis, I was hoping you'd say 'You should have seen the other fella' Re if you get no joy at Xanemos theres always Mega Gialos taverna a bit further round the coast. I walked to it from town a few years back.

It’s not at all painful and when I did it I didn’t feel hurt either. Maybe black eyes are like that? The colour spread to fill underneath my eye making a complete circle. So last night I managed to get through my kleftiko in Vareli without nodding off. And, after buying a pack of Gaviscon on Monday, got to sleep without using them. Typical, Saturday and Sunday nights had been difficult, but buying the cure made it stop without opening the packet! I continue to dislike the new buses. Who remembers in UK the introduction of OMO buses (one man operated)? I’m not going to encourage them by buying tickets at a kiosk or shop, so fall foul of the drivers who think I’m an idiot for paying on the bus. They drive off immediately the last boarder has passed their seat, driving hard right away. The Green bus drivers always (and still do) waited for you to sit down, (or latch firmly onto a post) but these guys seem intent on testing your gymnastic ability - and we haven’t got any! Local opinion is divided - everybody agrees they are from the mainland, some think they just need time to learn friendliness and courtesy to islanders and tourists, others say they are mainlanders who despise ‘us’ as much as we despise them. So far I tend towards the latter view. But in deference to the former I greet the driver with a smiling kalimera in hope of wiping the scowl from his face (without success so far). One wish, or top of my bucket list, is people’s names. How many people have I met here already who grab me with a hearty “Hello Dennis” to whom I can only offer conversatio without the respect of their names? I know their faces after having previously spent at least one fortnight in regular contact with them, but without avoiding consigning their names to amnesia! But one couple this week solved the problem beautifully - hallo Dennis you remember us don’t you we had a fortnight together last year (or whenever), Chris and Gary (pointing at herself first and him second to help with their gender!). It’s been such a relief. Thank you Chris. So off we go in the jeep in an hour or two. My weather app says It will be mostly sunny all day, so what’s with all these clouds? It normally rains when we hire a jeep so I fancy it may well do so today. At least we sit in the front where the rain can’t get us (unless there’s a strong following wind!).

If you can’t see the picture (presumably the black eye picture) you’ve got something wrong. Everybody else has been seeing it and saying it serves him right for being obnoxious.
Kev, Mega Gialos was also closed, I don’t have any idea why, just a chain across the entrance.
We had Platanos omelette with tsatsiki starter and they still haven’t acceded to my request for Russian salad - they said the lady who did it stopped doing so five years ago. I think it’s about time 5hey found a new lady to do Russian salad, because we liked it so much I looked up a recipe online and we made it. But not so good.
I’ve had two swims (and wines) this afternoon. Jasteri tonight and I may have the lamb in plum sauce again, it’s unbelievable.

I’ve only been to Jasteri twice, but loved it each time … enjoy!
I’m happy that your eye feels so much better than it looks - best keep your sunglasses on so that folk don’t mistake you for a bare-knuckle fighter! Hope the rain has kept away for you this afternoon.

dennisn, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that eye will be at least 3/4 weeks before it returns to normal , glad it's not painful and you were lucky it wasn't more serious judging by the position of the damage, however, as katet said keep yer shades on and enjoy the rest of your holiday .

Am I the only one wondering if there is any connection between Dennis falling asleep in Vareli, Vera having to pay and that black eye? 😄🤔

Sorry to hear Mega Gialos was shut, it has been generally open for a while as the folks who run Old Port House have posted fb pics from there since they came back for current season. The food is pretty good there as well. At least you got your omelette.

Bob’s shameful suggestion of links between sleep, payment and black eye are a figment of his imagination which are laughed into oblivion by everybody else on this forum. 100 lines, Bob! I must not accuse Elderlies of ulterior motives for sleeping.
Kev if you say there was activity previously in the season, I wonder if we were simply too early for Mega Gialos - it was late morning when we drove past. We arrived at Platanos about 11:30 and were almost the only customers until the crowds started to arrive an hour later.
When we got back to Villa Maria, I found an example of the current bad customer service from TUI. A couple arrived from Manchester and asked where they would find details of transfer coach for their return. There is no longer a TUI notice board with these details, merely a beautiful small placard saying for all your contacts etc, download the TUI app. They are of an age when app is short for appointment and smartphone is an oxymoron. At home they still have one of these dumb phones tied to the wall with a wire - it’s really confusing since it changed from a dial to buttons. They have phoned an answering machine twice and left messages, but of course they have no means of receiving the promised text response. Shocking!!!
Jasteri return visit last night, repeat of the wonderful lamb in plum sauce for me, whilst Vera had her best ever kalamari. I didn’t fall asleep but I can’t remember the price - we still haven’t paid 50 Euros for evening meal. Vera manages the catering arrangements at home, so she exchanges her housekeeping allowance for Euros to do the same on holiday. I’m in charge of eating. (Half the eating).

It was well into the afternoon when I pitched up there.

Two things. Cariad I guess you mean Jasteri. From your place go back to main road bus stop 18 and turn right towards Koukounaries, walk about 100 yards and it’s on the right (opposite Salt and Pepper.
Mega Gialos taverna was open when we retraced our route today, after 12 noon.

I can see it now.
OUCH! (etc.)
I hope that clears up soon, but more than that I hope it doesn't affect your holiday.
