We arrive back on the island 3 weeks on Monday, unusual for us to visit in August as we generally find it too busy hence the reason we’ve booked out of town. We shall undoubtedly venture into town but head back at a reasonable hour, possibly we’ll miss most of the crowds being late in the month. just noticed there are a few forum members visiting during the same period, it would be great to bump into/meet with some if our paths cross. a few years ago we had the pleasure of meeting Kate and Paul , and really enjoyed passing the time of day with them. we seem to be the ‘ crash test dummies ‘ so to speak after staying in the Alkyon in May post refurbishment, and now the Radisson Plaza . enjoyed Alkyon to the extent we’ve booked again for next May, Plaza a good deal more costly, I suppose date effects costing, but hope it’s worth the extra, I shall report accordingly in dispatches.

Your experiences and comments have certainly persuaded us to try the Alkyon next year. Quick question - what was the pool like? Full? Easy/difficult to get a sun lounger?

Pool was of a reasonable size, we didn’t encounter problems re sunbeds, also plenty of tables and chairs to the adjacent outside bar area

What a shame I'll miss you and Sue by a few days, Dave. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the Plaza. Nice to have the water taxi to hand, too. It's a fair-ish walk to the main road and bus stop 12 ... well probably ok on the way out, but I wouldn't like to do it coming back after an evening in town!

We shall be back on the island in a little over 2 weeks, we have previously visited in August and found it a tad to busy, however we still enjoyed our holiday, May/September our favourite time to visit. That apart, we have a couple of groups of friends who have visited every July since the late 90s, both parties who travel at different times have both said ‘ this season is so different from previous visits ‘ , despite their love for the island neither party will be visiting next year. They quote, rowdy behaviour, reserving of sun beds, general stress whilst out in the evening, I must add they both stated British holiday makers where not an issue. Visiting in August may allow us to make our own decisions, i will say the fact that certain hotel chains are buying up accommodation at an alarming rate, I fear a monopoly may soon exist, this being the case prices will inevitably rise,

we did notice that the island was alot busier this july, the town was heaving even in the day. i think this is a result of many people me included not having been the previous 2 years and carrying holidays forward. This led to more difficulty getting sunbeds etc saying that we went down to troulos beacha few times 11-30 12 ish and got beds down the far end. There was plenty of room to put towels and umbrellas on the sand which i wouldnt mind, but husband hates sand. I didnt see any rowdy behaviour except for a wedding group at our hotel luckily only for the first few days at our hotel, and they were definitely british. I heard quite alot of italian voices this year, but they wernt rowdy found them very friendly and charming. I never saw any greek staff harrassed or rude even when they were rushed off their feet. One day in zaharos troulos beach the young lad was on his own with about 12 tables to look after for drinks meal orders trying to clear tables to make room for more diners, inbetween having to serve people from the beach going to the bar for take out drinks ice cream. He was never inpatient, always smiling still had time to joke, even though he looked exhausted by the end of the lunch rush, with every table to clear. so we had to wait about 40 minutes for food, but no problem we,re on holiday nothing ese to do, and a lovely view to look at while we waited enjoying a cold wine. At least this year no problem getting on a bus whatever the stop or being packed like sardines. I think we need to accept skiathos is very popular and is unlikely to be quiet at anytime of the year. There is so little choice left of weeks left in the accommmodation we like the look of, we may have to consider late july or august so next year looks like it will be very busy too, therefore we have decided against staying in town.

We didn’t see any of the rowdiness, but wouldn’t expect to because we don’t visit bars or nightclubs, don’t even wander round town at night. We did find the Bourtzi very busy, more than in previous visits. And we did have one crowded bus, a real crowd that we’ve always experienced in Skiathos and it was one of the new ones. That was when the packed situation contributed to Vera’s accident.
But we didn’t have any problems except getting seated on the Bourtzi. But it was no surprise and no problem - I thought it was due to so many holidays put back over the Covid period. Yet, strangely, our flights were not full.

Dave, we found it very busy in May/June; the busiest we’ve ever seen it. However, I feel some of the sense of that may have come from places being short-staffed.
I too will be interested to see what late August is like.
Regarding the ‘chains’, my hope is that, as long as these stay small, with just 2 or 3 places each, competition will remain strong.
Time, as ever, will tell.

Cariad, regarding accepting Skiathos will be busy at all times, I’m not so sure.
It was quiet last year during the last week, and by all accounts had been winding down as usual during late September.
If they ever get to where it’s packed right up to 7th October, I’ve little doubt they’ll just open for another week or two.
Entertainers will ‘always leave them wanting more’ but those in the tourist industry believe ‘let’s take every penny while we can’.
It’s going to be an interesting rest of the season, and maybe an interesting few years ahead.
