oh im so enjoying this, i can just imagine the girls We had round 2 at breakfast this morning, obviously the ‘ only way girls’ are now divided, one group where sat for breakfast but then the other group arrived, lots of glaring looks and scowls, then finger clicking to the waiter from the original party demanding, and I mean demanding, trays so they could take their breakfasts back to the room to finish. I know this isn’t really forum fodder , but it’s giving me a giggle.

You can see why there are reports of 'unfriendly staff' in places. Imagine having to put up with these sorts every other week or so for a full season on rubbish wages with long hours.

I use to think that Italian women were , classy and sophisticated (Sophia Loren, Isabella Rossini, Claudia Cardinal) but that generation seem to have vanished if Dave's Italian PD's are anything to go by. Their Instagram and Facebook pages must be on fire at the moment

In 2008, on our second grand tour of Europe, I said to Vera I’ll take you to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. So we drove into Pisa not knowing where it was, I said look up cos’ it’s a tower and drove slowly along the narrow roads. Until I was harassed very seriously, lights flashing, fist out the window and horn blaring continuously. It was too narrow to do anything except ease away a bit and then pull in at a wider bit. The harasser was a young woman who re-emphasised her displeasure by delivering mouthfuls of noise which my non existent Italian interpreted as abuse. Later that afternoon I received similar treatment from another diva who blasted past me and pulled into a petrol station 100 yards up the road. But I did once meet a nice Italian lady (in Samos).

Attempt 2 Thursday started wet , continuous rain for an hour or so hence we made the decision to head into town around lunchtime. The boat taxi wasn’t operating so we asked reception to call a taxi, 25 minutes ETA so a coffee at the bar whilst we wait, some 40 minutes later a minibus arrived to pick us up, on the way to town it made 2 further pick ups at both Rada and Kassandra bay, 3 separate fares charged. Upon arrival at the new port it started to spot with rain so we stopped at fresh bar, we have visited fresh since the 90s so a warm welcome was received, the rain persisted, 1 drink became3 , when it ceased we headed up papadiamanti street ,the idea being I would wait in Main Street whilst my good lady did some essential retail therapy. Alas Main Street was shut, I know Phedrock opens early when weather is inclement so I headed there, this turned out to be a good move. There was quite a bit of musical equipment set up, on enquiring Phed said his neighbour 15 year old son was going to play for the customers. He duly arrived, a lovely boy ‘Philip’ Greek father,Madagascan mother. Boy oh boy what a talent, singing playing both guitar and keyboards, his music ranged from Bowie, oasis,Coldplay, Elton John, etc. what a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours on a wet afternoon. When we left it was brightening up and main street had opened, after purchasing a couple of belts from the leather shop we called in for a frappe. After being fed with bar nibbles at each venue, crisps, nuts etc, neither of us majorly hungry so we decided to give the new ‘Street food ‘ place Nami a go.situated at the rear of the cinema it was ok, cheap and cheerful, food edible but I don’t think we’ll be rushing back. Taxi back to the hotel and a night cap on the terrace.. An impromptu day,but most enjoyable. Awoke to sunshine this morning, fingers crossed it stays that way

Rainy days in Skiathos are a welcome change … just as long as there aren’t too many of them!
Your afternoon at Pheds sounds perfect. Do you know if Philip also busks? Only a friend was telling me about a young musician who is very much worth seeing.

Yes Kate he does busk, due to his age it’s difficult for him to get paid work, he had his cap out in phedrock and think he did ok, I’m sure Phed slipped him a couple of euro as well

Friday we awoke to blue sky’s and sunshine, after breakfast, one thing I can’t fault the hotel for an excellent choice from cereal, fruit ,pastries , bacon etc ,even smoked salmon, we decided to have a day on kanapitsa beach . Although still early there weren’t many beds available when we arrived, as the day progressed the beach became very busy, as full as I’ve ever seen it. The water sports people had a very profitable day, kayaks ,paddle boards etc well utilised. We spent the day reading, listening to music and generally relaxing, I know it’s harmless but those dam wooden bats and ball I find annoying, especially when the participants choose the area in front of you to play. Left the beach at around 4 with the intention of catching the 5:30 boat to town, this we achieved, it was funny to watch a young couple,English i think, try to pay by card for the boat taxi, this was met with a definite no . A couple of pre dinner drinks in Main Street the up the slope to Richie Povorie where we had a 7:30 reservation, we chose 5 tapas dishes all excellent, my favourite being the belly pork ,succulent and crispy. Accompanied by a good bottle of white wine and water 63€ , good value for the quality and ambiance. We then settled in Mythos for a nightcap before catching the 10:30 boat back to kanapitsa. One observation, town seemed quieter than previous nights, this being a weekend? . Perhaps change over day effects footfall in town.

Fortunately I'm not addicted to beach, otherwise that would drive me mad. And just imagine trying to go in for a paddle when there's a session belting out right across your pathway into the sea!
