Feedback 2013 - Restaurants & Tavernas

Honestly, we did more than "eat" on our holiday!
Just thought a "Food" review would be useful to others. Thanks to the iPhone I kept a daily diary. Cost of 2 courses & drinks ranged from a very reasonable €10 to an unreasonable €40+ per person.
As always, a thoroughly enjoyable time.

Friday 5 July
Arrived at Theodora

All as lovely as we remember
Dined at Taverna Avli - behind the supermarket (Platanias) Agia Pareskevi
Olives, bread, served with garlic butter & olive paste
Baked spiced feta
Meatballs
Beef Stifado
Fillet of beef stroganoff
€40 ish to include drinks Very good food & friendly atmosphere

Saturday 6 July
Breakfast at Kabourelias
Omelette & coffee very good with excellent Wifi
Bit of browsing around town before afternoon Mythos at Scuna - lovely beachside venue & reasonable prices
Dinner at , Bounounakias, Agia Pareskevi
Grilled vegetables & pizza to share €28
Lack of sleep crept up on us. Early night

Sunday 7 July
Kolios beach too busy, but nice to note the taverna open
Pareskevi beach with picnic lunch & champagne (bit of a birthday celebration)
Infinity Blue - Grandfathers Meze, Chef special Lamb pot
Wonderful food, attentive service, spectacular views. €68 to include wine etc
Theodora bar until too late!

Monday 8 July
Late start, thick head!
Breakfast of scrambled eggs at Theodora, full English for OH €10
Lazed by pool & Kolios beach for late lunch at 4pm. Grilled sardines & Greek salad €20 with beers. Lovely atmosphere. Hope it does well & continues to stay open.
9pm Jimmys, Agia Pareskevi , stuffed pepper & tomato & OH chicken. with wine etc around €30. Spoiled marginally by the brat of a child watching child friendly iPad ap with volume full on!!! Manners please!

Tuesday 9 July
Round the island boat trip didn't go as planned due to high winds. Mata Hari. Really appreciated the commentary from the onboard crew. Very informative despite the PA system continuing to fail.
Visited instead Tsougria Island, fabulous deserted beach with rustic taverna,
Agia Eleni beach, now has a second taverna, & finally late lunch & swim at Katigiogis
Island (The Pelion?) moussaka on the beach!
Evening at Theodora BBQ didn't win the quiz!

Wed 10 July
Think I need to stop drinking Theodora red wine!
Elias beach after lazy start.
Nearly got stuck in the forest dunes after taking a wrong turn on the way back!
Kolios Taverna - Wonderful setting
Bread & baked feta, OH grilled mushrooms,
Sea bream & salad , chicken fillet in curry sauce.
Half litre white half red plus bottle water & complementary water melon. The lot 40 Euros!
Bit lacking in atmosphere; no Greek music. But suspect once people know they're there - whoosh !

Thursday 11 July
10am Kolios beach here we come
Kolios beach for the day with picnic & vino
Taverna Stathis
(Towards Vromolimnos, just before Hermes)
Beautiful setting in lemon & olive trees, just annoying traffic noise as near the road.
Garlic mushrooms, Sagnaki, crusty bread
John,, fillet steak with mushroom sauce
Tre, seafood risotto
Red wine, white wine ..... €85!!!
Very nice but not 85 Euros nice

Friday 12 July
Lazy start. Theodora brunch
Airport run to collect the family
Kolios Taverna
Small cheese pies & grilled mushrooms - to share
Stuffed peppers & tomatoes, John spaghetti with enormous prawns!
Vino etc €40

Saturday 13 July
Varthalamis
Mixed grill not so good, meatballs dry can't recall what everyone else had but cos t less than €10 per head.
Travelled by bus!
Not so good going down but fine coming back

Sunday 14 July
Bourtzi for lunch
Greek salad & club sandwich
Taverna Avli (Again)
Long wait due to Tax inspector!
Usual bread olives & tapenade
Spinach & cheese pie to share
Chef special chicken in clay pot
Beef fillet & spaghetti €35 including wine

Monday 15 July
Agia Eleni Beach
Greek salad €6
Jimmy's Agia Pareskevi
Pasta in tomato sauce
Pizzas to share.

Tuesday 16 July
Late morning Mythos at Bourtzi
Lunch at Milos Taverna
Greek Salad & Sardines
Lunch & plenty to drink €98 for 7 of us
Airport Strike!!!!
BBQ at Theodora
We won the quiz!

Wednesday 17 July
Storms!!!!!
2pm Meze at Taverna Selini €13 for sharing platter. Lovely & the sun is now out!
Kanapitsa Taverna
Pasta Greco with Feta
John seafood risotto €23 plus drinks

Thursday 18 July
Late start.
Too late for Kolios, Pareskevi & Mandraki?!?
Assellinos Beach. First time for this beach & loved it. Thought taverna to be a bit pricey though. Think it was €20 for a Greek salad, plate of chips, a beer & a bottle of water!?! Sparkling water same price as beer.

For our grand finale....

Not sure what went wrong for us at Anatoli, because we found it not to our taste, the food or atmosphere. Probably the least enjoyable of our stay this year, but each to there own I suppose. Better food, views and atmosphere elsewhere on the island.

Think Anatoli holds special memories for us (son's engagement) Plus we go as a party of 7 or more so very much create our own atmosphere.
Wherever we ate, even Varthamalmis, we just loved our time there as I know you & everyone else does.
Well jell tonight - our son & girlfriend & her family should have been home hours ago, but Monarch to Manchester didn't happen. When we thought they were boarding they were dining at Milos instead

And now they're being put up at Kanapitsa Mare for the night! ( last heard they were luxuriating with a bubble bath

- Only to be appreciated after 2 weeks of Greek style showers!)

I go to Varthalamis only for fresh fish, I don't think their meat dishes are as good as their fish. I don't even need to remember which one it is that I like, the waiter shows me which it is on the menu, all I know is it begins with 'B' and costs around €13.

A sea bream in other establishments has cost me €40+ in the past and hasn't been as good as the 'B' fish so that is why it gets my vote, I should have made it more clear on my listing so I'm sorry if you were disappointed. That apart, you managed to squeeze most of them in I see

Thanks Tre. I think a few more 'maybes' have been added to our list for our stay late September. I think we shall have to become hobbits if we're to eat in them all! BTW, where is Varthalamis, I've not heard of that one before.

I don't know if it is still the case but they used to have someone giving out fliers on Pap St on the left just before the cinema, if you know 'Uncle Michael' who used to give out fliers for Jimmy's Bar then they used to stand together. The flier entitles you to a free half carafe of house wine.

love this report on your eating habits, we have been three times and can never remember the name of anywhere, going in May my mouth is watering already. first meal of any holiday in Greece for me is always moussaka.
