We're starting to look at dates for next year. For the last 3 years( Since we discovered this dream Island) we've always stayed at the same place in Kolios. We have always thoroughly enjoyed it. Next year it's likely that our party will include a child - 8 year old boy who is adorable & very sociable. With this in mind, together with the fact we are looking at school holiday weeks ( What am I letting myself in for!) we are wondering whether it might be a better option to stay in town so that in the evening we won't be reliant on the bus service. The downside will mean using the bus in the day to get to the beaches. Would love to hear other thoughts on this. Also any S/C accommodation recommendations in town that won't break the bank in July/August? Thanks in advance

We took our grand-kids to the Diamond in Kolios and they loved it there, spacious rooms and fabulous pool, also near a good selection of beaches and tavernas, you need a bit of space with children. The family who run the Diamond have children of a similar age to your 8 year old too.

Also any S/C accommodation recommendations in town that won't break the bank in July/August? Thanks in advance Ah the perennial and for me unanswerable question. This must be the most asked question across all Forums and crops up again and again (along with what is the best Taverna) because there is NO definitive answer. If someone asks for example is there a Cash Point in Troulos there will be someone who knows the answer and that's it done and dusted. However if someone asks which is the best Beach or the first two questions I mentioned it becomes subjective or a matter of opinion and therefore can never be definitively answered by anyone I have been 5 times and stayed Kouk once Skiathos Town once and Troulos 3 times but I have no Kids and so my answer will not be relevant to you either but .... I did find it easier to be in Skiathos Town and bus out each day to various Beaches / Walks etc than be at Troulos BUT I just find Troulos suits the 2 of us just fine A mate of mine went to Skiathos 2 years ago and he asked me exactly what you have asked and I told him the same. For a bit of "daft" but more to prove my point I ran a vote and asked people whether my Mate should stay in Town and Bus to the Beaches or stay on a Beach and when necessary Bus into Town 101 people voted and 52 said "stay in Town" and 49 said "stay out of Town and Bus in" - and that is as good as it ever gets. As you seem to be a Kolios fan already just try Town and then compare the two ... sorry I know that answer is of no use whatsoever. Ironically I will be checking out the Diamond Apartments when I go next 30 days or so with a view to staying there in the future but each of my visits have been great and I have enjoyed every single day of each wherever I have been "stationed" Cheers Tall Man

We have been going for 11 years, stayed in Aghia Pareskivi (Jimmys), then Kolios (Demetris & Kolios view (mega hill)We also stayed in Troulos (Filia / mega hill)and also tried Skopelos. We have never stayed in town....yet ! Kolios is just so peaceful and both Demitris and the Diamond have stunning views; one of the sea, the other the lovely valley, everyone has favourites and this one is ours.

No use i know, but the Diamond is our favorite and I would find it very difficult to stay anywhere else. For us, town is great to visit for one or two evenings, but we like our tranquil tavernas, bars and supermarkets and would not like to eat every night in town where it is too busy.
As we have our own vehicle for the whole holiday, staying half way along the island always seems the best option as we never have to get onto a packed bus.

The big question is which month will you be going, July will be ok either in town or out but August is heaving when the young mainlanders and Italians come to have some fun in the sun. I would imagine town would be quite noisy/busy so I would plump for a beach thinking of the child. Parking in town is also v difficult in August.

How much approximately would/does a car cost to hire for a week/2weeks please anyone?... As we are staying in Troulos next year and as first timers want to see as much as we possibly can of the Island, I wonder how costly it would be to have a car for the whole 2 weeks, as opposed to a couple of days in each week?...

kathos, We intend to go first 2 weeks of school hols - sort of now ish - 25 July for 2 weeks. We so love The peace & quiet of Kolios but we enjoy the evenings in town. scottydi, we booked car hire online before going this year - arguscarhire.com - €560 for the 2 weeks for an automatic - Ford Focus or similar. Got Hyundi Accent. To hire for one week only was about €400! To be fair it was sat in the car park a lot of the time as we both like a drink in the evening. Until this year we've been fortunate enough to rely on our son to drive us, but this year we had the first week on our own. Great for accessing Mandraki, Aselinos etc. The one time we decided to go to town in the evening on the bus it was heaving & 3 buses past us full before we got on. Hence why we are looking at the options of staying in town. However, we would still hire a car for 3 to 5 days & believe we can get a good rate from Victoria or Mustang once we're there. €100 for a jeep for 3 days in 2012. Decisions decisions

This year we hired a Suzuki Jimny for the last two weeks of June from Mustang Car Hire and Magda charged us €400 for the whole two weeks. We picked it up outside the arrivals hall at the airport and dropped it in the airport car park when we left. We have done this for the last 6 visits. Don't have to rely on transfer coaches, buses or taxis.

Woody, on reflection we think we paid too much for the car this year. Basically because we're used to driving an automatic at home. Won't book it that way again. Now thinking that me & OH might have to get a cheeky Skaithos break on our own before late July next year. Just looking at what seems to be a cracking bargain for first 2 weeks in June!! Watch this space Just need to check if we can get time off work
