It has been very quiet on the Forum recently so I thought that, as people prepare for their 2014 visit(s), it might be useful to hear of any good ideas for saving weight in your luggage. One way I try to save a few pounds is, instead of bringing a whole array of battery charges for the phone, camera, video camera etc by investing in spare batteries for all of these and charging them all up before I leave home. It makes quite a difference and also means that you don't get caught out if your battery runs done in the middle of a day out. What tips do you have? Bob

I've taken to buying my toiletries at the airport. A bit dearer than supermarkets but far cheaper than paying for excess baggage. Also buy a couple of beach towels there & leave them behind if you're a bit "Borderline" with the weight on the way home. Tre

I let Vera do the packing and lie valianlty when the checker-inner asks if I packed the bag myself and if there's anything in my bag I don't know what it is.

Ha ha dennisn, what about returning from Skiathos, when asked "could anyone have interfered/tampered with your luggage"? We all say "NO" Yet in reality, our bags may have been left for hours at the gates of our accommodation, brought on an unaccompanied truck to the airport & then dumped at the taverna Love it! 9 weeks on Friday! I promise not to pay excess baggage this year. Ok, so we upgraded to 25kg each!!!

We stay in a civilised villa (Maria, Troulos), no trekking, so our bags come on the coach with us, we take them into the airport and checkin with them. You don't need to worry about yours being left at the taverna though - it's been demolished hasn't it! Call in at Salt and Pepper please and remind them that Dennis wants a Sea Bass at 6pm on 20th June. I did tell them before we left last June, but you know how these front of house blokes are sometimes.

Remember Dennis, don't fall out with Vera before she does your packing or she could really land you in it by packing some illegal items! Bob

If I fell out with Vera, packing illegal items in my bags would be the least of my worries! There wouldn't be any bags, there wouldn't be any holiday, there woluld only be unutterable misery.

Tried to post reply earlier & got an error message!! Annoying! Anyway, dennisn, you make me ! No holidays = misery. I'll second that. My secret is getting my other half to "suggest" that we should book a holiday. Like it's his idea!! Shh Read that airport taverna being demolished - how sad - will have to plan more carefully & walk to Milos!! Is there a missed business opportunity ? Re Salt & Pepper, will def try out the sea bass if we're in the area & remind them of your ETA! Here's wishing one & all a fabulous holiday season 2014. Tre x

Booked yesterday for our 8th visit, so exited as we didn't think we could go this year and we go in four weeks ! Booked with Thompson and they are only allowing 15 kg unless you purchase extra, so looks like I'll be looking for weight saving ideas also. Enjoy everyone and hoping the ice cream shop is still open :-)

If you know where you are going, think about what the shop sells and don't take those things. The one that comes to mind is if you know the shop sells suntan lotion, only take one bottle (each?). This may work for other toiletries. Wear your clunkiest shoes. Take advantage of jacket/coat pockets; no weight allowance there. Take full advantage of the hand luggage allowance. Throw a couple of t-shirts in. www.thomson.co.uk/editorial/legal/baggage-allowance.html was consulted in the formation of this answer. 5kg of hand luggage on most flights.

That sounds like a pretty lightweight snowboard, . I shall not be taking mine to Skiathos (partly cos' I haven't got one, but I'm saving the weight anyway).

I am now panicking at the sight of all our holiday stuff waiting in the small bedroom and knowing, just knowing (A) it wont all fit in 2 cases and (B) going to be well overweight... I really wish I hadn't bought a single bottle of suncream and got it at the airport.. Ive got 6 plus 2 bottles of aftersun, so cant justify buying more and leaving that here.. Hmmm, wonder how frugal I can be with hubby's clothes?... already suggested he *layers* up for the flight, didn't go down well ..

Aw c'mon Di, it can't be all that bad. And if you're over the weight limit (notice he avoided saying "if you're overweight"!) all it means is you have to pay a lot of money extra at the airport, so you'll be able to take all your bottles of glop stuff. There is no way you can economise with hubby's stuff - men always travel light. I mean, how much stuff do you need for a fortnight? I have three pairs of shorts and three swimming cozzies, a t-shirt a day, plus a swimming t-shirt and a pair of sandals. Two pairs of socks (really only need one, for the journey, but extra covers accidents), two pairs of underpants (really only need one, for the journey, but extra covers accidents). Vera will rinse out socks and pants after I wear them, but most days I'll be in a cozzy for the early morning sea swim, then another for the afternoon pool laze. I have two or three lightweight shirts for eating out with Goldy Hawn (I don't eat out of my shirts, I wear them to impress her, but only one at a time). Oh, I have two hats, a swimming one and a walking one (virtually no thatch means my head gets burned in the sun). One charger fits iPad and two iPhones, another for MacBook and another for Vera's video camera (you can't expect spare batteries to last two weeks). A biro to do the Mirror crossword and other puzzles. MacBook and iPad go in the cabin baggage to fill it up so they don't think I'm a cheapskate holidaymaker. We each have a lightweight towel. Mine has dolphins on it, so I don't use it, just shake myself a bit and stand in the sun for a couple of minutes. So that's hubby sorted out. What can you do to match it for yourself? - Right, two bras, two knickers (light and dark) - you'll be wearing one of each on the journey, so one set weighs nothing. Two or three blouses, half a dozen t-shirts and 3 shorts. A couple of posh non-wrinkle dresses in case you meet Tom Hanks or me. Three cozzies. A pair of flip flops. Share the chargers and biro with hubby. Remember, when you rinse out light clothing it'll dry whilst you're out swimming. I used to know a woman who took two pillows and a frying pan, together with a very large packet of sausages and the same of bacon. She also took a travel weighing machine to try and control the weight of their duty frees on the return flight. But she was a plonker! With those tips, I'm sure you can get your cases down to less than 20kg each, easy peasy. If you don't, check at the end of the holiday on what you didn't use and you'll be amazed.
