....and I can remember the last World Cup there. The island didn't seem busy at all and then the night England played Slovenia the port just filled...no idea where everybody came from. Great atmosphere though. Just made sure we caught the 2nd to last bus...
We (Fiona & I) have stayed with Miltos and his family in Kolios everytime. No need to look elsewhere for the most relaxing holidays ever.
Quick story about last year. We arrived on the 8.20 from Manchester and were in the pool by 14.45. Planned to go early into town for food then early night. Waiting at bus stop 13 we decided, with another couple, to get to town earlier sharing a taxi...the obligatory flashing of the lights and 5 euro per couple we were on our way...
I sat next to the driver...who smoked (love it). Out at Papadiamantis St. paid him...off to Maria's for pizza. Was a bit disappointed that it had changed hands but still ok. End of meal...got my waistbag from back of chair and...no wallet! Stunned...the waiter (we think) might have thought we were trying it on. Luckily Fiona had our emergency 70 euros. Could only think it had been stolen, lost...it had 800 euros, credit card and driving licence in it. We had made friends with some of the shopkeepers over the years and one of them phoned the police so we could at least leave contact details if it was handed in. I must say that nobody could believe that it had been stolen. To be honest...felt dreadful. Re-traced footsteps vainly, then thought...just thought...TAXI! I must have taken out my wallet to get the 5 euro note. What if I hadn't put it back into the bag and when I got out of the taxi it had fallen from my lap.
Down to the taxi rank, which was pretty busy by now, waited in the queue until our turn and told a driver what we thought might have happened. He asked for a description of the driver and all we could tell him was that he drove a mercedes (yeah...I know) and that he smoked. Astonishingly he said..."I think I might be able to help you..wait here." So we did..
Taxis came and went...15 mins later a different driver shouted to us that someone would be with us in 10 mins. You wouldn't believe how we felt by now..sure enough..taxi drives up and flashes lights...window down...it was our bloke with wallet in hand. I wanted to snog him. Offered him reward he wanted nothing. Insisted he took 20 euro to buy his kids something because dad has to work late. He very reluctantly did.
Can you imagine anywhere else where this might happen? I'd like to think it would...but for Skiathos and the Skiathians it seemed the norm.
Long live and God bless this island.
