Hi Tim yesterday we went to Legharies Beach on a 125 'Ped. We turned off the main road just passed bus stop 9 and followed this road for about a mile then turned left down a rough track, it is signposted Legharies and Kechria beach I think. This is a lovely winding dirt track across to the North side with fantastic views. There is a small carpark beside a lovely Taverna, Seabass, fied Anchovies and cold Mythos and the smallest Kitten I have ever seen! The Beach is 50mts from here and has beds and parasols and a lovely cooling breeze off the sea. P.S I didnt eat the kitten! it took us about 20 minutes from the bus stop turnoff there are one or two steep climbs but I think you will be fine on bikes.

Or the turn off in Troulos bus stop 18, going past the dog shelter soon turns into unsurfaced road and also leads to that beach, which is also right beside the delightful Kechria Beach.

Tim, I have done a few routes for you on Ride with GPS. Just click on the links below to view them. I have added some photos of the beaches as well. I have started some of the routes in troulos as that is where you are staying. If you want to head for the north coast directly from Skiathos Town, the road is extremely steep over the "mountain" (towards the monastry and Kastro). The turn off near Bus Stop 9, is very steep for about 1/2 a mile, but the road/track from there down to Kechria Beach is not too bad for a mountain bike. See the route here, if you click on the POI's on this route you will see some pictures of the beaches. From Troulos, you can go to Koukounaries and take the track to the north coast from there. The route can be found here. A short route around the Kanipitsa Headland can be found here. If you want any more suggestions, just ask. Woody

No Tim, the only way is to go via Kalivia is up to towards the monastary, then head over the mountain towards Kechria. No coast rode at all there as it is very hilly and there are steep high cliffs along that part of the coast. If you want to go that way see my route here. However, this route has some gradients of up to 23% in places and that's just on the tarmac road. Best to head west along the main road and go via route from Bus Stop 9 or go all the way to Troulos and head north from there.

I have taken serious note of this and think I'll be trying to see if a Jimny wiill do it, I'm sure Woody's directions are far better than the map.

Dennis, I have travelled on nearly every road/track in Skiathos that a Jimny will get down and never had any trouble. So much so, that I no longer need a Skiathos map with me when we go! If you really want a rough track to test your Jimny, try this route. It starts at the junction to the monastary near the ring road. Beware though it is rough, but a great trip to a pebble beach called Nikotsara Limani. Nothing there at all, but the beach which is sided on both sides by cliffs.

I have also re-routed the Skiathos Town to Kechria route as I realise I had it slightly wrong. This route takes you to within about 400 yards of the beach if you are driving (not much parking though, just have to find somewhere), but it turns into a rough path/track which you can walk or cycle down right to the beach.

I have now set up a Board with all these routes on. If you want any specific routes from a start point to a destination, just let me know on that Board.

It is Tim, even in a Suzuki Jimny in 4 wheel drive you need to be in first gear and that's on concrete roads! It looks like ascents up to 23% and descents up to 28%!

No way do I want to test a Jimny. I want to travel round some of the lovely countryside without terrorising Vera who, as a passenger, far exceeded her tolerance level with the 4WD track down to Kechria and some of the hilly bits with drops at her side. I was fine and would love to do it again, but there are two of us. I'm a very bad passenger myself, simply because I rarely travel as one and I know full well the person at the wheel is completely incompetent to keep me safe and well, so I understand Vera's position perfectly. What I need is a map which has accurate roads, because to be honest, the ones I have don't really help and I ended up several times backtracking out of dead ends and house entrances. Your mapping looks more reliable, so before we get there in September I shall be studying them carefully.
