I had a great time on this holiday. The Yalis Apartments, Achladies were just what I wanted, and with a quad hired from Victoria Rental (opposite bus stop 19) everything went well. Fortunately I met a friendly single young lady from Oldham; so we both ate out on an evening which helped with that single holiday-maker issue. She also introduced me to a lot of her friends who were on holiday as a large group of singles. I had some good nights out and ate some great food in some lovely spots. The only downside for me was the weather, although it did what it did like clockwork. At about 3pm on Sunday 21st the clouds came in with a later storm, then at about 3pm on Monday 22nd the clouds opened and the Sun was out and shining again. Then on Thursday 25th to Friday 26th the winds picked up. This made the North West coast beaches wild and bleak at times with 8ft plus waves and lots of washed up beach debris. The water taxi from Achladies to Skiathos Town was great too, and added another interesting scenic dimension to travelling into Town. All in all a fantastic sun soaked holiday which gave me lots of experience, confidence and good memories. Would I go back to this Island - yes!

Thanks for this d.
That Thursday we were on a boat being tossed from pillar to post between Skopelos and Skiathos - I rather think the waves were quite a bit more than 8ft out on the ocean.
Do come back again, you know already how good it is.

I think I would have rather been on solid ground that day. This point also makes me question the winds and the 24 hour grey day and storm (near the end of June 2015)? I believe there were heavy rains on the Saturday 27th too (after I had left the Island). Does anybody have an approximate guide on when the best weather is on the Island? Some might assume that during peak season there would be sunny days every day. Basically, I would rather not go during peak season because of the very high temperatures and booking prices! I am just wondering whether June is a little bit unpredictable. So, would September be less windy, and is there a predictable wind that blows at a particular time of the year? From all the experience on this site I hope that there is some information on when best to book for prices and pleasant weather? When I say pleasant I mean sunny days with blue skies, no rain or high winds, but the temperature does not have to be scorching? I might even book for September this year! OK d I'll see you in September - Bourtzi 2pm any day probably, between 12th and 24th.
Nobody can promise you the weather. We've been going to Greece for years, June and September and we've had both good and bad. But NEVER bad enough to spoil our holiday (we even enjoyed my birthday outing in September last year - see my video in the Videos section). I have to say we are agreed that this last June was the worst weather we have ever experienced in June, but that Thursday was the windiest, and to be honest I can't remember more than a couple of poor days (might look back at my daily reports to sharpen my memory). However, we always enjoy our holiday tremendously and we laughed ourselves silly when we walked home from the beach last year in the rain. In our opinion, 99% of our holidays have been great, with 1% affected by the weather. That windy Thursday was, in my opinion, a one-off exception, please, please, don't let it put you off. September last year was terrific, even the sea warm enough for me to walk straight in.
Of course, it helps if you have a fortnight like us, then one day is a negligible part of it.

Dennis and all, please see the image above and this video inserted. The waves don't look too bad but it was definitely wise not to swim. The week I was thinking of begins on the 25th September, so I probably won't catch up with you. So, there are no famous regular winds such as the Sirocco or Mistral which come at regular times? What I am aware of is the fact that Skiathos is an Island covered in green areas/forests and it has Island weather. Does this mean that the weather can never be fully predicted. One thing for sure is though......the weather is better than here in the UK in the summer

Ah well, I posted before you amended to include that picture (makes me look a bit daft). However, I think it's a great picture and it wouldn't put me off.
I really think the weather is whatever it turns up and for us, has never been a negative factor. I think Skiathos is too protected by the mainland to get the Mistral/Sirocco.
25th September will, I think, be the very last week of the season, with quite a lot of places closed. The UK return flights go out empty to pick you up and I've heard they are usually a bit early, rather than on time, certainly leave on time.

Hmmm, you could be putting me off that week now Dennis! The prices are cheap and they rise quite a bit for the two weeks before (even though that is after the kids go back to school). I wonder if it is worth booking the week of the 11th or the 18th (work) and taking a risk on a late reduced booking?

Oh dear, I can't be taking on making recommendations.
As I said, the weather will be whatever it will be - I have been in Greece in September when it was so hot it was almost unbearable. Unusual, but not impossible.
Closing? Well, there will still be some places open, so it won't be deserted. Some people prefer it without the invading hordes.

Can still get decent deals for later in season without really running as late as the last couple of weeks of normal flights. I've so far always gone late Aug/early Sep and though the weather has been slightly variable it was still warm enough to eat outside at night. Some cloudy days and brief rain on one occasion each of previous 2 trips (2012/2013). If you are looking for genuinely 'hot and cloudless' as late as last weeks in Sep I'd go for Cyprus. Went there last year Sep 7th-14th and it was well up in the 30's every single day, hardly saw a cloud all week. Back to Skiathos this year, Aug 28th. I'm not expecting weather like last year, that wouldn't be reasonable given how far north the island is and the influence of the mainland. Depends what sort of holiday you go for, if it's cloudy or cooler I just spend more time walking than by the pool/on the beach.

During summer I would prefer the Greek Islands. So, I am wondering if Kos or Crete further South might be warmer in September? I am looking for blue skies and weather suitable for the beach. The cloudy days are rather depressing when you have spent money on going abroad. The Canary Islands later in the year might be worth waiting for and then return to Skiathos next year!
