Day Nine
Monday
Another wonderful sunny morning and a visit from the grey cat. Came onto the balcony, lay down under my chair for 20 seconds, then off he went. Well and kalimera to you too matey!
Well, first surprise of the day. Walking over to the bar I came across a dead snake, well I should say the front half of one! Informed later that it was one of the poisonous ones and everyone was surprised to see it. The only other snake I have seen on holiday was in Corfu, in a small olive grove. This one slithered in front of me as I was walking through, not an experience I care to duplicate.
Wrote up my post and enjoyed a breakfast of two fried eggs on toast washed down with a glass of orange juice.
Decided on a trip into town today so off down the lane to the bus stop. Just read the time of the buses and trying to work out when it would arrive, when it appeared! Great, no hanging around then.
Got off at the terminus and walked along the new harbour and into the old, looking for Gin Fish. I am meeting up there for a drink before dinner with my neighbours from the Thymi's Home, where I stayed on my first trip to Skiathos, for dinner on Wednesday and as I had not heard of it before, I wanted to get my bearings. Either that or spend the whole of Wednesday evening wandering around Skiathos town :-):-)
Sat on a bench in the harbour for around 20 minutes, enjoying the sunshine, people and yacht watching. Decided to go for a wander so just as I started to climb the steps at the Rock & Roll bar, I noticed a lane to my right and took that. Went up turned left and came to the pink church! Stopped in at the cafe opposite for a cup of coffee and small water (3.50 euros) and watched the world go by for another hour! Heady stuff hey! :-):-)
Continued through the lanes but had to divert as the workmen were out replacing paving but continued up near to top of Papadiamantis street. Had to make a very hard decision, do I carry on to BS 4 or go back to terminus?? Latter won out so keeping parallel to Pap street I carried on down coming across the No Name. Spotted someone from the complex, had a quick chat, then down to terminus. The zebra bus was in (first time I have seen it this holiday) so jumped on. Left shortly afterwards and on way back to complex called in at Dream House and had a beer and chat with Costas and his eldest daughter, Anastasia (?). Talk turned to Brexit!
Spent another pleasant hour and when I got my money out to pay, Costas refused to accept!
Back to bar and chatting with guests over an orange juice! Eventually left to get ready for dinner.
My restaurant of choice tonight was going to be Jimmy's but as it was 9.15 pm when I set off, I decided I would try the Avli instead. I hadn't been before so new experience. Chatted to a couple from the complex who had really enjoyed their meal so checked out the menu. Something I had never seen on any menu in my trips so far, they actually offer a starter platter for one and a seafood platter for one also! Forward thinking in my opinion as there are a lot of solo travellers to this island.
I opted for the fish platter and although not on the menu, I asked for garlic bread, both dishes to be brought together. The owner said it wouldn't be a problem. :-) the fish platter was made up of swordfish, shrimps, squid and sardines and came with potatoes and salad. I asked him to leave out the squid please. When my food arrived, I had a small pitta bread with a sprinkling of cheese but so garlicky it would keep the vampires away! :-):-) wonderful. The fish platter had all the above (minus squid) but with an extra piece of white fish - delicious and three mussels. Never have I eaten or wanted to eat a mussel in my life and there were three sat there staring at me (so to speak). My salad was potatoes from the oven with broccoli and carrots. :-):-)
Ok, in for a penny - took the tiniest piece of mussel on my fork and put it on my tongue. Oh, that was really good so ate the rest. Had a little of everything else before tackling the second mussel! Scraped it out of the shell, had a bite, delicious but then thought about all the mussels I had seen clinging to rocks and decided enough. Ate the rest of meal with most of a small carafe of red and asked for the bill. The owner came over and when he saw that the only thing left on the plate was a mussel in its shell, he said "you have one mussel left, eat, it is fresh today". I told him I was so full I couldn't eat another bite but thanked him for a delicious meal. I asked him what the other white fish was and he told me it was snapper. Bill came to 22.50 euros.
Left and as there were a few people in the bar at the complex, had a chat and finished my evening with a lovely, milky coffee.
