So you are the other pocketgpsworld user are you Dennis? I have used their Speed Camera databases for quite a few years now for my Tom Tom. ONE OF the other 491,000 registered users, Woody! (unless you mean the other one on this website, although I think maybe there may be more) And a Moderator there to boot.

I'm sure vera wont tell you off for creasing t shirt, Tip i now roll all my clothes instead of fold, doesnt seem to take as much room and stops creasing.

I'm sure vera wont tell you off for creasing t shirt, Tip i now roll all my clothes instead of fold, doesnt seem to take as much room and stops creasing. I've only got one hankie and that's folded nicely in a drawer for when I wear my suit (hankie triangle in top pocket, y'know, elderly stuff). Is that a beanie hat? - Quickly Googles Beanie hats and it's NOT one of those, I wouldn't be seen dead in one of those, that's as bad as wearing a baseball cap (or any other hat) indoors (y'know, elderly stuff). My hat is a sort of trilby that doesn't stick up and is floppy. I have white one and a not white one. We don't need extra room - you can see the huge gap between case contents and lid - I'm expecting stuff to flop around uncontrolably in there, none of this sitting on suitcases to close them!

Jut to get back on topic, I wasn't aware of the recent events on TA until I saw this thread but it reminded me of discussions I had on there after I had a moan last year about posts being taken off that were clearly not breaching the rules regarding promoting other businesses etc they were just genuine posts trying to further the discussion. Their removal was completely ruining the flow of the thread and actually making it difficult to follow so I raised it. I dont recall who contacted me (not someone from TA) but basically I was told that if TA received complaints they would remove a post. It wasnt clear what the cutoff of complaints was or how many people needed to complain once each to trigger it but I suspect it isnt many. And this is where it gets a bit sinister. My suspicion is that a small number of people who post a lot on a particular TA forum and become 'experts' can then easily form a strong cartel and if they all agree between themselves to whinge over a post to TA they will get it removed. I rather suspect this is what has happened to Pinky. I've PM'd pinky about unrelated things on TA and it is obvious from her PM's there isn't a drop of harm in her and I cant imagine that a single post of hers merits being taken down. But try saying something remotely negative (like I've done on TA occasionally when it s been necessary) and incur the wrath of those posters in control and it will vanish, mine did. TA need to make up their mind whether they want a genuine forum where people are allowed to express their feelings properly and genuinely or not. My view is it is far too tightly policed and too much under the influence of some posters exerting an influence. I dont post on it that much any more, shame because there is some genuinely useful and helpful stuff on there.

My own feeling is that TA has some sort of policy which is intended to prevent malicious stuff happening - either excessive false praise or excessive false bad reports. Good idea if people want decent information.
But it seems on many websites (including TA?) some people get into the habit of raising problems which don't exist. When there is a clique like that, they will easily get posts taken down, simply by commenting by PM to each other that something isn't to their approval, so several of them "Report" the post with similar adverse comments about it and hey presto it gets removed. "Off Topic" is a fairly innocuous but useful complaint and daily diary is apparently not a part of TA, which is (I think?) intended to give users opinions of destinations, not diary stuff. Some of us (including myself) like diary stuff, others don't and there you have it - maybe if likers posted effusive thanks for the next diary it might deter the dislikers. I seem to remember a thread about how Skiathos is becoming un-Greek, with things like chips. It was a good thought for discussion, but a little heavy for me.
I recently spent a night at a place which had TA reviews. One of them was tremendously helpful, warning of current roadworks making access a nightmare - and it WAS! Another recommended the fish and chips from the restaurant, so I ordered them and they were just about the worst I have ever had the misfortune to eat. I arrived at 7:30pm and was told the kitchen closed at 8pm so I ordered even before I went up to my room and it was served immediately I sat down five minutes later. It seemed to be from a stock which had sat waiting for me all day! I didn't do a review myself - if other people were happy with it, I didn't think my review would be well received.

I understand your points Dennis but there is a totally separate section of TA for the actual reviews of a particular place/attraction/accommodation and can understand why there are firm rules for those submissions. It's the heavy handedness of the TA forums that gets a bit annoying for me. I really should finish packing, got to be up at 4am to go to Crete

......and yet, if you think back to last year when a certain Skiathos Hotel was bombarded with 5* reviews all posted by first time posters, it took ages and lots of reports to stop that! Bob

Well thought out and informative posts Kev and Dennis but shouldn't the web and social media sites, including forums evolve? I realise that rules are there to guide people and maybe when TA first appeared it was what people required but eventually they are going to want more than just questions answered. I know some chap eventually posted the link to the 'general chatter' area but I had scoured the home page and couldn't find it there. When I did check it out I didn't bother to look at any of the posts as nothing stood out as being related to Skiathos. Unlike this forum where each section is clearly defined.
There will always be detractors and someone, for whatever reason, decided to attack PinkyGirl. The www is an excellent place for malicious people to attack others whilst remaining anonymous.
What if Woody had decided to wipe out all my posts regarding my first trip to Skopelos because someone on this forum had decided to complain believing them inappropriate because they were not about Skiathos. :-):-)
If the moderators had been on top of their game they would have closed all the feedback threads on their forum not just one.

Bob, I so remember the posts about that hotel. The "fake" reviews went on forever! Amy I also tried to follow links to "general chat" on TA...... Thinking can TA be seriously relied on?? Will continue to promote these pages

Pinkygirl's thread was eventually reinstated thanks to a poster who complained directly to TA.
The problem is that TA is so huge they have to rely on self moderating hence that is why you have the 'report inappropriate content' button which used sensibly is a good idea. The general TA rule is that posts should ideally be restricted to travel advice which is its purpose however it is almost inevitable that some chat will happen. Some readers don't like this or find it 'annoying' and so take it into their own hands to hit the content inappropriate button. If enough 'hits' are made then the thread is automatically removed.
This system has its faults when posters think they have the right to remove threads because they don't think they have adhered to the rules, I find it infuriating especially as they can remain anonymous.
I hope this helps to explain things a little, we will never know who the posters were who 'downed' Pinky's thread, personally I don't believe they were Skiathos posters but people from the wider Greece Forum.
