Hi! I've come to this forum via a recommendation on the Trip Advisor forum.
We're planning a holiday to Skiathos at the beginning of August 2017 and are trying to make our minds up as to where to stay. I was originally looking at Magda Studios in Koukounaries as it seems like a nice, peaceful location but then have been advised that Troulos might be better for choice of restaurants and a quieter beach. I'm now trying to decide between Magda and Maria Yannis or Villa Maria in Troulos.
Does anyone have any advice about which resort to base ourselves in and/or which of those places to stay?
Looking forward to exploring Skiathos!

Welcome operagav to the forum. As Amy says, Dennis is our resident Villa Maria expert, so I am sure he can give you great advice. personally, I would prefer Troulos as the choice of accommodation and tavernas is slightly better, but Aghia Paraskevi and kolios are also good and I also find that these are better, being about half way between Skiathos Town and Koukounaries for getting to other places.
The Theodora Apartments in Kolios are very nice and quiet as is Green Park in Aghia Paraskevi. The Thodora is a bit more of a walk to the beach, about 10 mins. You didn't say if you are going to go package or independent. A great place to stay if you are independent is the Skiathos Diamond Apartments in Kolios, about 100 yards away from the Theodora. This is my favorite place to stay, it is run by our good friends Christos and Soula and you will be very warmly welcomed as I suspect you will be wherever you stay.

Welcome, Gav - I think everyone on here will have their own preferences, but (in the main) wherever you eventually choose will be lovely and you will have a memorable holiday and make many friends. I responded to your question on TA - we favour Koukounaries, but have never stayed anywhere else. One day we may get adventurous!

For what its worth, my vote goes to Troulos.... we are going next year for our fourth visit in a row, we hire a jimny now to make sure we see/do as much as possible on the island, for one so small there is so much to do and see believe me... My reasons for us choosing to keep staying in Troulos is the vast array of accommodations and tavernas to choose from... we will have stayed in four different accomodations by next year, this years was Villa Maria which you mentioned and it is lovely, we just decided we would keep trying others but wouldn't hesitate in going back to VM.... Yes the other resorts are all lovely, half way to town is all well and good, but the times we have passed the bus stops on our way into town and seen how many waiting for a bus that is possibly already packed make me personally feel you might have a better chance of getting on them in Troulos? but of course luckily that doesn't affect us but something to consider if you intend using the buses? Saying all this, if I could go short notice for a week, I would stay anywhere....

Thanks everyone - I think it's definitely going to be Troulos because of the quieter beach, good selection of tavernas & near the end of the bus route. (I've heard we could get a bus to Koukanaries and stay on to go to town - or get a water taxi from Kouk, which I quite fancy too!) Enjoying looking through all of the information on here & getting a bit of a "feel" for the island. Looking at the reviews, accommodation in the 2 (Villa Maria and Maria Yiannis) sound a similar standard - the difference being a more "lively" bar at the Yiannis with weekly Greek nights and a quieter vibe at the Villa Maria? Is the Villa Maria close to the beach? I think I read somewhere that walking from there, it's not advisable to walk on the road but I could easily have got confused with the different options I've been looking at! Thanks again everyone - think I'm almost ready to make a decision and book!

I'm not really the expert on Villa Maria - Jules (Julie and Lee) have been there long before us.
However, we've never been to any other accommodation in Skiathos. We chose VM by pure chance for our first visit in 2013 and fell in love with it and the owners and the resort and everything else, just name it we love it. We shall arrive there on Friday 9th September, coincidentally an hour or two ahead of Julie and Lee, so if you need any up to the minute information, just hang on a couple of weeks. We would not want a "livelier" at night place.
The bus stops at Troulos in August will be merry gathering places for hopefuls with ambitions to go into town. If and when they get lucky, they will practice the finer art of sharing space with a lot of other people. It's bad at Troulos, but it's not much better getting on at the terminuses in town or Koukounaries. That's August for you.
We walk to the beach at crack of dawn every morning. We are completely unathletic, septuagenarians and it takes us an enjoyable stroll of 20 minutes or so - it doesn't feel like a long way, not via the main road as we are not suicidal. We use about 25 yards of main road only.

We walk the long way round this triangle to the beach. North west, then south. Woody's Google map, see link at top of page.

Thanks for that Dennis - all really helpful! Yes, we're after somewhere that's quiet too, so Villa Maria sounds like the perfect choice for us. Great that it's only 20 mins walk away from the beach too. We might hire a car for a few days so any advice nearer the time as to where we could go to would be great. As for the bus - it sounds pretty much like the buses on Santorini which are packed to the rafters too, with the ticket guy pushing/crawling through everyone - all part of the experience I guess! Thanks again for all your help - appreciate it!

Forgot to say, I'm just waiting for my renewed passport to arrive so can't book quite yet, but want to do it soon as my husband needs to book leave ridiculously early!
Looking forward to exploring a new island - we love Greece!

operagav..... one of the reasons we are trying where we are going next year is because of an evening after our meal somewhere in Troulos, or after we came back from town, we used the bar area in Bourdourania apts (just around the corner from VM) and really enjoyed the vibe there, very nice bar area indeed... just our choice... It's where we have booked for next yar actually... we missed having a night bar this year.... also Morfia apts across road from VM almost also apart from having the wonderful Ratatouille tavern onsite also have a nice chilled bar area at the back and we use that also, whether we have eaten there or not, something else to consider?.... Sorry if I'm confusing you lol

operagav, welcome! Glad you took the advice & checked in here! I'm a Kolios fan so can't really comment on Troulos. I know Dennis & Di will advise accordingly. Watch out for Trip reports from Dennis as I believe he is back again in .....18 days!! Lol

Thanks Di To be honest, we don't usually have a drink back at where we're staying - we would usually have some wine with the meal & then out for a drink or 2 before going back - I guess you could say we're lightweights! But, good to know about the bars to visit on the way back & have read good things about Ratatouille so that will be on our list, I'm sure.

Beware of paying too much attention to Tre - she's got my arrival date out by a week - 18 days my Royle Family! And she refused to be jealous of me going in ELEVEN days. I think it's down to me originally not knowing that Tre is an abbreviation of Teresa, not Trevor - funny people these women with blokeses names.
Anyway, take time out to read through this website and you'll pick up lots of useful information.
