This might be a stupid question but please someone answer me seriously... I was always going to buy an add on for data as I only get 1GB a month and hoped to use 4G wherever I was, Ive spoken about this before I know... anyway I couldnt do the add on till I got here they told me which I duly did so I had an extra 10GB... my own 1GB was used up in six days so now using my add on, I will have two weeks at home before my allowance kicks in again, the GB's I have left over from my add on will be able to be used in the UK I hope?

This is the sort of picture I was expecting.
My experience of Wi-Fi was changeable, to be generous. If 4G is available, I expected it to have the impact being described.
And with the rule changes as to how much is allowed to be charged, it now looks all the more accessible.
Thanks for the input everyone.

It's confusing me too Di. But I can't help because A) my contract is different - I have 5Gb UK and 2Gb Roaming on a SIM only contract, and B) my allowances renewed on 20th so by the time you asked, I had full allowances back again. Whilst out there, I did wonder how it was going and used my app to review my usage. I started in UK with 4.8Gb remaining and all 2Gb Roaming untouched. When I checked in Skiathos it appeared to be using UK data at first, but later seemed to be using the Roaming data. When I got home, it indicated something like 500Mb Roaming remaining and 4.8Gb UK remaining, but I can't be sure my memory is accurate on the UK figure. I think i may get onto Vodafone to clarify before September, but I think my contract situation wouldn't clarify yours - I didn't buy an add on.

Having just returned from 2 weeks in Cuba, Skiathos internet access is brilliant by comparison. to access internet in Cuba, you first have to purchase a government access card ,at a cost of £3:50 for an hour. then you have to find an approved wifi zone, which are like hens teeth, once you have activated card it becomes apparent a Cuban hour actually only lasts for about 45 minutes. And if you're thinking of using 4G ,forget it no 4g,3G or in fact Gs of any description.

Cheers.
I really should give a general impression of what I found.
For pretty much the entirety of my stay I was on the southern coast, along the bus stop route.
My general take on things was that internet speeds were broadly in line with what we get back in the UK.
I think I was 4G almost all of the time, apart from the odd occasion bouncing between 3G & 4G, but that happens at home, too.
I didn't do any TV watching as such, which would be the highest speed required (and which would also use up your data allowance very quickly), but I did keep an eye on the cricket on the BBC Sports website. To put you in the picture, whilst the TV coverage for the cricket is on Sky (which it won't let you access anyway, being out of the country), the BBC broadcasts radio coverage worldwide and does a page on the BBC Sports site with updates in words and pictures. Included in that coverage is a bit of video every time there's a wicket. To cut a long story short, if I ever clicked on those short videos, they worked perfectly.
The bottom line is, if you are going to Skiathos and wanting to use your phone for data, you'll get a very similar service to the UK. The one proviso is that I didn't venture anywhere off the beaten track, so wouldn't want to comment on what it's like on the north coast, or up in the hills.
My data allowance in 15GB a month and I'm a fairly heavy user - I usually get pretty close to my limit at home - but I didn't get close whilst away.

I have to say the new EU regulations were a financial blessing. I generally found WIFI quite poor, both connectivity and speed, whereas 4G was really good. I'll try to remember to check it on the north coast and in the hills in September YM, although to be honest, phone signal is one of the last things I think about when we tour the lovely island.
