YM, I’m really sorry to hear that Avon have changed their formula. I used some this year, that I had acquired last year and this is the first time I had absolutely no bites - not even a tiny nibble. Sadly, I left the bottle with my accommodation owner as she had been bitten quite a lot. I wonder if she’ll have any left when I return next year! 😄

A real shame about Avon, I completely agree.
But you can check out the ingredients at Avon’s own site, as well as the scientific evidence about its replacement.
I’ll post links later.

To jump in, my wife normally gets bitten mercilessly, this time not a bite, Wilko own 50% Deet, recommendation from elsewhere. I personally prefer the mozzie wipes especially if in the beach, no sandy rub ins. , better coverage to areas. I have received 2 bites, but not major swelling etc. Boots own bite relief cream is excellent, itching etc gone in minutes.

YM, may I safely assume that you apply your suntan lotion prior to applying the mosquito repellant during the day? If that's correct, does the repellant negate the properties of the suntan lotion? I only ever use the repellant at night but find it interesting that some people may apply it during the day. Now, I can’t answer that, as I don’t use any form of sun protection. And I don’t sunbathe. I sit/lay under the parasol all day, apart from walking to and from the bar, and the very odd, very short walk to the sea/pool, for an extremely short dip. I never burn.

Thanks YM. I know another like you, doesn't wear sun protector, sits in the shade all day and ends up with a lovely tan! I on the other hand, need to cover every inch in sun protector and wear a hat, or i end up with very red, burnt skin/scalp.

Interesting that citronella meant to deter biting insects, doesn't actually do the job.

We remained relatively bite free but with the timing of rains a day or two after we arrived Im guessing there will be adults emerging in next week or so. Handed a fresh tin of Wilko stuff to katet last night.

And very grateful she was, too! As long as you try not to breathe in when spraying it’s much more pleasant to use than others I’ve tried. Thank you 🙏

Yes the DEET isnt very nice I have to say but it seems to do the job. We had maybe 5 or 6 bites each over 2 weeks and none oif them became too red. Considering how much garden there is out front at Asimina's House I thought we did pretty well. On a particularly bad night in 2015 I got bitten 6 times within 10 mins of sitting down at Big Bad Wolf for an evening meal. People were spraying each other in Agustera bar. Mozzie armageddon that night.

i went to India just after monsoon season so alot of damp vegetation. everyone was sprayed up at night the hotel and restaurants all had burners lit, little coils that smoke and repel them. But... the toilet near the hotelbar had open windows and lots vegetation outside and the bright light attracted them, they lurked until people used the toilet then pounced you would her a shreik and people were getting bit on the bum, i dread to think where the men were bitten, of course no one thought to spray bum. I used to return to our room and use the one there. I managed to get no bites at all, the second time i went i bought local stuff dirt cheap called odomos you can buy on line this worked well too. i did a spray of avon skin so soft then spray of mozzie spray on top

Odomos are very big on telling people it only uses the ‘natural’ repellant N, N-Diethyl-benzamide. They’re not so big on pointing out that this is DEET, which is a man-made chemical.
I think the cream is 12%, so it should be effective, but not as long-lasting as DEET strength 30-50%.
Their site makes bizarre claims like “…Unlike most mosquito repellents, Odomos does not contain deadly chemicals which kills or knocks down mosquitoes.”
This is quite bizarre, NONE of the usually repellents “kill or knock down mosquitos”. It’s just not how they work. If you wore a chemical which worked by killing mosquitos it’d almost certainly be very bad for you, and probably illegal.
Even if it works, I’d avoid it on a matter of principal - I don’t like companies trying to sell me stuff by lying to me.
I’m a grumpy old sod.
