it looks like airport chaos still, i think down to bad planning. They are advertisisng for staff to train for security at east mids airport, 2 months basic training to check bags , man x ray machines, shouldnt they have recruited weeks ago? The problem is they offer full time work april to october rotas round 24 hours some shifts start "am . But winter 21 hours. All for the princely sum of £10-65 an hour who is going to do unsocial hours for that, and probably a long drive to work.

As I am the first forum member to travel this year, I will try and post some honest information about our airport experience, however we have booked fast track, a facility I have been informed Manchester has now withdrawn due to excessive demand. I honestly think if they posted staff at the start of the queue advising folk to remove items such as electronic devices and liquid from hand luggage, coupled with belt, watches, jackets etc the whole system would flow much easier

One of the things they’re suggesting is checking your baggage in early. I think you can do it up to 24 hours before (can anyone confirm?) and they’re suggesting going at night when it’s quieter.
We fly just after 2 in the afternoon, and Leeds-Bradford is around 50 minutes away, so it’s certainly doable. But most of the queues I’ve seen are at security when hand luggage is checked in, not when you check your luggage in for the hold.
Dave, can you comment, based on your experiences?

pThey are advertisisng for staff to train for security at east mids airport, 2 months basic training to check bags , man x ray machines. Now that sounds dodgy. Two months will take the first two months of the season, pay trainee rates for two months, save loads. Do you really think it either takes as LONG as two months, or as LITTLE as two months to train someone to do this? Because I don’t.

I suspect this is being thought about, but no one dare say it. Yet.
One of the factors contributing to the delays is staff sickness, presumably at least a portion of this is people staying at home with a positive Covid test, and/or mild/no symptoms.
How long until someone says we take them out of the equation.
It does appear to be the logical next step, given current policy.

I think “official” sickness is no longer relevant - how many people are going to stay home with (untested because tests cost) covid without sick pay? I have just deleted my covid test and trace app (which I had to get when I got smitten) because today it pinged me, with the info that I spent 15 minutes or more in close proximity to somebody with covid, on Wednesday 13th April - as I stayed home from morning to night, my faith in the thing got enough doubt to dump it. Plus that was a few days after I finally tested negative myself.
EDIT TO ADD also it offered me the advice that the rules no longer apply!!!

Well, my early luggage drop-off plans are scuppered.
Jet2 only do this for morning flights (before noon). We fly around 2:00pm.

I don't mind turning up a bit early for baggage drop off but there's no way I'd leave it overnight at the airport. Incidentally my first outward flight from EMA went fairly smoothly last week (it was only to Jersey) but they managed to delay our return flight to Exeter by just over 2 hours, for a flight that actually takes 40 minutes max !

Re previous day luggage drop off - why give them longer to lose your luggage?

Re previous day luggage drop off - why give them longer to lose your luggage? Be fair Bob, it gives them more time to lose it properly!

I'm flying with Jet2 next Friday (at a ridiculously early hour) so will report on Manchester's current situation. I'm not off to Skiathos, unfortunately - just a girls weekend in Portugal.

I’ve had a mate visiting from Germany.
He returned this morning, and I asked him to text me when he’d cleared security.
He did so just after 8:00 this morning, saying there were no issues and that it was pretty quiet.
For us, the downside is that we’re going at spring bank. The good news is that we’re going on Wednesday 25th, a few days before the opening weekend of that school holiday, so hopefully we’ll be too early to be hit by the queues. On the downside, we return on Saturday 4th at the end of the week. However, as we land after 11pm, I’m hoping it’ll still be quiet.

Manchester are reopening terminal 3, hopefully this will help to ease the congestion at security I'm watching this with interest. By all accounts, the issues have been caused by short-staffing, not a lack of space, so you might think it can't be a lot of help. But on the other hand, even if it's just a case of the same number of people waiting the same amount of time, but being spread over a larger area, that might make for a more comfortable delay. And crowds of people are easier to handle of they're smaller. Every little helps.
