I've broached this a few times before; it's an issue which keeps coming to mind.
I'd love to own a property on the island which I could use as a bolt hole. Not to use as a holiday, but somewhere to pop over to when I felt like it.
A few years ago my in-laws had a caravan in West Wales. The caravan park was only open March to October, and they bought it (in part) to give the next generation a cheap holiday. So at the start of each year we'd divvy up who was going when between us. Whilst there, and in the winter, the in-laws lived at home in Huddersfield. When none of us were wanting to use it, the in-laws visited. So whilst technically, they lived in Yorkshire, they sort-of-half-lived at the caravan in Wales. Separate to this, they'd go elsewhere in the world on holiday.
I'd like that. I don't want to live in Greece permanently, but it'd be nice to have that second home, especially in retirement. It just rings the changes, gives a nice break from the miserable weather, etc.
But we're talking about £200,000, and obviously you have to pay for your flights every year on top of that. If you could rent somewhere for a month or two, two or three times a year, it'd ultimately be a lot cheaper over say 20 years, to not buy.
Has anyone else considered their options on this?

We hear lots of discussion in parts of Britain where people buy houses to be used occasionally as a bolt hole, removing housing stock for locals and pushing prices up. I wonder if there is a danger of this happening on Skiathos.

That’s always a danger.
There is another factor, though, and I believe this is happening in many places. Many next generation islanders don’t want to stay. What’s a peaceful paradise to us is a boring, dead-end place in the middle of nowhere to them. I suspect there may be more leaving than outsiders looking to buy.
When I look at the property for sale in town, there are lots of places which are a house with a separate apartment included. Clearly a family house, split to include a ‘granny flat’, only instead of granny is for the now grown up kids.
Look on AirBnB and you’ll see lots of these flats up for rent. Dig deeper, they’re being let out by the kids, who now live and work on the mainland. “I’m in Athens, but my dad lives upstairs and will help if there’s a problem.”

Like you YM I looked into it a few years ago but the complications and red tape post Brexit along with my change in personal circumstances means it is probably unlikely to happen, plus the prices seemed to go up quite a bit compared with 4 or 5 years ago. Can't totally rule it out but I expect all the money from the combined sales of my place in Nottm and Helen's in Torquay will just buy somewhere a bit nicer down there.

The benefit of your own place you can leave beach towels summer clothes toiletries there. But you could probably rent a long term rental day 3 months a lot cheaper that 14 day rates. With no responsibilities maintenance etc.
