Visiting Skiathos for the 1st time, mid July for 2 weeks, staying in koukounaries. Really looking forward to visiting the many beaches in the area, and hopefully having a really relaxing time, taking in the Greek way of life. Are all/most of the beaches in the area within walking distance? 20/30 mins or would it be advisable to hire a Jimmy 4x4 for a few days, maybe a week??

Hi keithb, Koukounaries beach is right on your doorstep and you can walk to Aghia Eleni and Mandraki beaches from there too. The bus stops going into town cover many of the beaches with perhaps a short walk. If you wish to explore the island further going inland or to the less accessible beaches then a Jeep would be useful. You would need this if you wanted to go up to Evangelistra Monastery, for example and some of the restaurants up in the hills. The beauty of staying in Koukanaries is that you are always first on the bus.

Keith, if you're a gung ho walker, the island is small enough to walk to lots of places e.g. I've seen them at Kechria beach. Can't understand it myself, but it takes all sorts and they seem eager to walk a ten or fifteen mile round trek. I do it by Jimny. Anyway, a good (nay, excellent) place to look is at Woody's maps skiathosboomerang.freeforums.net/thread/280/route-maps

Thanks for the reply ekskiathite, we're there for 2 wks, 15/29. Really want to relax & recharge. Judging by other posts I read on here skiathos is stunning? There aren't many places I would return to as I think the world is a big place, but I'm already thinking that skiathos maybe that place? dennisn, thanks, I'm no gung ho walker, and the thought of a 5/6 mile trek really doesn't do it for me, especially whilst on holiday. I think a car/4x4 might be useful for our 2nd week as we have my mother in law and sister in-law with us the 1st week, don't think she will want to venture too far? ekskiathite,,,if you spot a man at Manchester airport buried under a mountain of luggage,,,,help,,,that might be me.

A Jimny 4x4 is the thing - some places (including my favourite - although I haven't visited enough places to start choosing favourites really) have signs saying 4x4 only (and you should believe them!). I imagine they (Jimnys) come in various qualities - I've had two, the first one's speedo didn't work (at my driving speeds it didn't matter, but it didn't tell me how far I had travelled which would have been nice), the second one's folding roof had noticeable gaps (BUT when it torrented down - see my birthday outing video - it turned out that the gaps were in the back, so we didn't get wet, but back seat passengers would have).

Hi Keithb will certainly keep my eyes open for you. Are you flying out with Mr Cook from Manchester? We will probably be the ones last to drop bags at airport. Last time we flew from Manchester my husband thought we were flying out later than we were and then we went to wrong terminal (that was the airlines fault)and they refused to let my daughter and her husband drop bags until I pointed out their mistake re terminal.(Whew-I was nearly in tears. We drive down from Glasgow. I will find it hard to believe if you do not want to return. It might not be next year but I am sure there will be many more visits in the future. Skiathos is beautiful, the sea fabulous and there are so many opportunities to get on a boat. Beaches fab and very good restaurants/tavernas everywhere. Nice drives too across the island. We have booked a Jimny for a few days in the hope that we get one of the nice ones (I like to keep up appearances!)as ours have been more like the ones dennisn gets. We usually look for one the day before we need it but they have all got us from A to B. Relax, chill and enjoy!

We may try for a white one this time - the first was red because we asked for one without looking at it and apart from the dud speedo, the bonnet had been sand-blasted. We didn't take any pictures of it! Second one was green, quite nice I suppose, but we fancy a change. I can't go with the idea of booking before we get there - we like to go look at them a couple of days in advance and say "We'll have that one". The trouble with white ones though is they do show the dirt, don't they? (Says whitevan man Dennis!!).
