Hey Dennis I was browsing the wine section of one of the major supermarkets yesterday looking for a nice little Italian or French red when I came across a bottle of Mavradaphne of Patras! I googled it when I got home and it seems that you can find it in all of the major supermarkets. A new one on me but I assume you are already aware? :-)

Thank you Amy. It's my personal favourite and I can find it fairly easily.
But here's the best story. It was the wine I chose for the first time I brought Vera home. I think I've already said I don't know anything about wine - this business with red or white goes way over my head. All I know is it's OK if it's sweet - if it's sour I don't like it until about the third glass! But I chose Mavrodaphne of Patras simply from the name - I knew Patras from my time in Cyprus. Incredible good fortune, it's delicious. Incredible clanger, Vera doesn't drink. And as a diabetic, she couldn't eat any of the two boxes of variety chocolate and shortbread biscuits either. First date fail.
It'll be the 20th anniversary this September. :-) and not a day too long.
They have Mavrodaphne in both the nearest supermarkets to Villa Maria.

Wow, 20 years! Well done but I must admit having met Vera in the flesh, she is a lovely down to earth lady.

I hadn't had a date for over 30 years, so I had no idea. I asked women at work and they suggested wine and chocolates or biscuits, so I got wine and variety chocolate biscuits and variety shortbread biscuits - those big tins you keep your Christmas cards and love letters in.
I've made up for it by buying flowers every week since! One week I bought some lovely blue flowers and then her son and daughter in law told me they were painted and lo and behold, the water was starting to go blue. I snatched them out and chucked them in the bin - how can people be so false as to paint flowers?

Thats lovely flowers every week, what they do is stand them in water with blue dye in ,it takes it up the stem to the flower usually carnations. yes it is strange having a date after many years with the same person, i felt like a tongue tied sixteen year old again, and didnt know whether to offer half when we went out, or would they be offended, its all so different now. when i received a bouquet once my sons falling about laughing, oh mum no one does flowers ! They do now ! I remember shopping with the present mr cariad when i hadnt known him long, and i said i could murder a macdonalds, he looked so relieved and said so could i, i dint like to suggest it though, i thought you were too posh for macdonalds He learnt ! its nice to know men are so confident either in the dating stakes. 10 years for us this year.

Don't your sons buy flowers for Mother's Day? I bet they do. Call them wimps when they bring them. And it serves them right that flowers are always MUCH more expensive for Mother's Day. Which is why that's the one week I don't buy them - I used to get mine every week, same fruit, veg and flowers shop, EVERY Thursday. They knew me so well. But they never had the gumption to say Dennis, just give me XX for them, we won't charge you that price. Maybe that's why they were richer than me - come to think of it though, they went bust for lack of custom, so now I have to get my roses in a supermarket.
My stupid teeth can't cope with a MacDonalds (I'd have to cut it up with a knife and fork) - you should see me struggling with a Gyros. Just wait until I get my new ones in Skiathos though. Not that I'll waste them on a MacD, they don't do proper chips!

yes they do buy me flowers for mothers day beautiful white roses and lillies. They said men dont send flowers to a date, they are older and wiser now and send flowers to their wives/partners. I think supermarket flowers very good value because they buy in bulk. After all your teeth problems i think you should post a photo of your new pearlies ! im always worried about getting teeth problems while abroad, my friends crown fell off at the front of her mouth, after much mumbling behind her hand ,someone at the hotel offered her false nail adhevsive worked a treat sticking it back until she got home. ive got a dreaded visit this week, he always tries to sell me root canal work at £400 a time (rather have a holiday ) i had two lots and ended up having to have them out so never again. He wont do them on nhs says its not cost effective for him, judging by his top of the range mercedes it is ! Teeth and glasses two thinks i hate paying for.

Extractions are much cheaper than root canal work. However, gums don't work so well. In my case, the root canals were not a permanent solution, just delaying the inevitable.
So now my current plastic ones are loose, wobbly, don't meet together and won't bite much other than custard and soup. I've been complaining about them to him for ages and he keeps putting me off, but latest was in summer I could have a complete new set (gotta be both uppers and downers to match up) for about £900.
So I made enquiries and Skiathos dentist will do them for €650. So Angela will make me an appointment as soon as I remind her my arrival is imminent and he'll see me on the first Saturday morning, or in other words, 77 days today. I shall lie to my dentist back here that I leant over the side to look at dolphins and coughed the uppers (or downers) out to fall to the bottom of the sea and got a new complete set out there on my insurance!
