my friend has worked at thomas cook for 31 years. she received a call to say cutting down to 3 staff -still 2 managers ! Did she want to work 30 hours 22, or 20 hours instead of full time or take redundancy. She wants less hours but asked about redundancy as she only has 2 years until her pension they couldnt give a figure but said its capped at 20 years. how can someone decide if they dont know the amount? Bad planning and organising should we be worried about bookings?

It appears we're of a not dissimilar age, with just a few more years needed until we can retire.
I suggest to Skiathos (I wish the mortgage were similarly close to expiry).

What a horrendous way to treat an employee of long standing. The news should have been delivered in person by a manager. I hope that they followed up the 'phone call with a letter to your friend, laying out the options. Bob

Worked there 31 years and they say redundancy is capped at 20. That sounds wickedly unfair. I don’t know the rules so I can’t comment further. In my own case I got voluntary redundancy at whatever the rate was and early retirement, with service credited with extra years to age 65.
I think you you could suggest to her enquiring about a similar deal, at least crediting the next two years.
And yes, it sounds very poor for TC, surely a thriving company should not be looking at dumping an employee with that service record. Bodes ill for that company and I’m pleased I don’t use them.

Poor from TC, they should be able to calculate exactly how much she will get, capped or not they know how much x numbers of years is worth. I knew when my job got made redundant (also capped) although in the end I didn't take it and moved to a lower paid job within the University instead. With so few years left before retirement anyway and the amount of info already out there that TC are not in great financial state I'd take the redundancy.

I agree with the general consensus that TC are treating loyal long serving staff terribly, I like Dennis am unsure of the law re pension capping. Unfortunately the number of different carriers to Skiathos have become more limited over the years, and it appears no other airlines interested in picking up the mantle. We are using TC flight only in May, but may switch to tui in future, I am a tad worried we have an all inclusive trip to Cuba booked with TC in August, this a £6k holiday, hopefully nothing will happen, but a few warning signs beginning to show.

money will be safe as atol protected but who wants the risk of holiday gone at the last minute. i was in kefalonia when kosmar went bust. shes decided on redundancy if decent amount as has mo mortgage, but cant claim any benefits until retirement as she has savings. they have know for awhile Tc going through tough times most people now book on line agencies cost alot to run with rents staff etc
