So, in my pursuit of potential alternatives to the usual direct (but becoming increasingly expensive) flights to Skiathos I've been looking at the potential of Volos now that Easyjet are offering flights there. I've only just quickly skimmed over the feasibility and these are guide prices only.
The only flight I've found that goes direct from UK is a Gatwick flight on Wednesdays, I tested it at peak season with a dummey request to travel 21/8/19 and return 2 weeks later. The initial quote incl taxes is £201. I did not pursue it further but I'm assuming this would not include hold luggage which I'd guess would be an extra £50 or so.
The flight would get you to Volos airport in the evening, around 8:30 local time. The airport is around 30 min drive (45 by bus) from Volos itself. There is a bus at around 9pm which is 5 euro. A taxi is typically 30 - 35 euro. All the ferries have stopped running by the time you get to Volos so I would calculate in another £40 for a room overnight and a taxi down to the ferry terminal.
First Volos-Skiathos ferry leaves 07:45 and will cost £27 one way. Obviously you will reach Skiathos the day after you left UK not same day. So unless I've missed something this isn't a huge saving in peak season (it was the price of the ferry that surprised me) but it potentially offers an alternative if the flight only options become horrendous and an emergency alternative if something happens at Skiathos airport. I was hoping that Easyjet would be trying it from more UK airports so if its going to be LGW for the forseeable future it's not something I think I would contemplate for now.
