When you book a holiday, what time do you prefer your flights, and why?

Early start and get there by lunch time ish. When it's coming home time have breakfast at a sensible time, leave for the airport without hanging around and back in the UK in the afternoon. I hate late flights so ten to avoid them whenever possible.

Same as the boy in blue. Get home early enough and I can get the first load of washing and ironing done before bedtime.

As well as loving Skiathos, I'm also a great fan of Rhodes. Jet2 used to do great flight times from Newcastle - departing at 9.00 with the return flight from Rhodes at 13.00. For the last four years it's been arrival in Rhodes at 22.00 with departures at 1.00, so I've given it a miss. I don't know how flight times are arrived at. Bob

cheaper landing charges mid week very early /late. some islands flights tuesdays/ wednesday to those of us still working we dont want to go back to work rest of the week means we have to take iwo and a half weeks off. i like day before free too, to pack etc. i like flights about 9am, then there at reasonable time and dont have to get up too early either, although i dont sleep well because of the excitment

So, almost always we’ve flown very early. You know the score, up at 4:00am (or earlier!) flight at 6:30, land at 10:00, which becomes midday Greek time, in the hotel by 1:30pm, a bit of time to unpack before going out for the evening.
At the other end of the holiday, straight up, breakfast, and to the airport.
We though that a later flight would mean the loss of an afternoon on Day 1, and that the gaining of half a day at the end of the holiday would just mean sat around doing nothing.
This last time we found different. The late arrival just meant we had to unpack partially/more quickly; we never get the time to go to the pool on the afternoon of Day 1, and we had a great last day due to organising a ‘courtesy room’ (for free), to enable us to store our cases and have a shower.
We even got an extra day of free beach towels.
And boy oh boy, did I enjoy having a lie on on the morning before setting off for Skiathos.

We’re quite happy with a late morning/ early afternoon flight out, once we’ve checked in ,and we are in the lounge we’re on holiday, don’t do hauling bags, everything in hold, except to my grandkids amusement ‘ my man bag’, multi pocketed everything organised. We live within 45/50 minutes of the airport so if we arrive home before midnight we’re quite happy, we will always ask to keep our room till late afternoon and pay if necessary, always nice to shower etc before heading to departure lounge. Would not consider a flight out arriving later than say 9pm, any later it’s unpack and bed.

The difference between weekend and mid week flights can be a substantial saving if you can be flexible, especially if you’re a large party.

Surely simple supply and demand. We want to go on Friday, not midweek. Not that we are working with holiday time off problems, but we do things midweek for the other 48 weeks of the year and don’t want to disrupt our routines.

Another reason we avoid midweek, about 5 years ago had a wed cheap easyjet flight to mykonos, landed back at gatwick 5pm took an hour to battle traffic to offsite parking, 3 hours later only about 30 miles away due to the m25 traffic at peak times, another reason we now avoid Gatwick. Traffic usually lighter at the weekends, especially sundays. If i ever win the lottery, i shall hire a private jet, can you imagine ?

Up to around 1pm outbound and 4pm return (assuming a 2 hr time difference) preferred but I've done some hellish trips in the past (Cyprus) arriving early hours of the morning when flights been delayed slightly. EMA used to have 2 slots to Skiathos on Fridays, 9am and 12pm roughly. TC decided to drop the 9am which at the time I thought was a mistake. The 9am always left on time but by 12pm there was more option for other airlines missing slots etc and the 12pm was never as good imho. Then it changed to about 1:15pm and never seemed to be on time but then TC went bust. TUI have taken the slot and this year taken a lot of people's money on an advertised early afternoon outward with mid evening return only to go back on that today and swap to late slots. I'd expect that from easyJet or Ryanair but thought better of TUI. Disappointed.

I’m a victim of this change, Dave - although TUI hasn’t had the courtesy to let me know yet. Just been reading the earlier thread about this. It’s not ideal, but won’t matter too much for me, but the group of friends I’m travelling with includes some fairly young children. They’re trying to change dates slightly, but there’s nothing showing as available on the website.
