one of my very good friends who has been to skiathos ,skopelos even Allonissos many times, lost her husband to covid this week. He was only 69 no underlying health issues ,not obese never smoked and double vaccinated. Ironically they cancelled their holidays to greece this year where they hoped to celebrate golden wedding, to be sure of being safe and didnt want hassle of pcrs and plfs. So please everyone keep wearing your facemasks and be careful and ignore people who say its burning out, and hopefully we will all make skiathos 2022.

By the way, can somebody explain how people can suggest it’s burning out when every news bulletin includes details of the latest infection figures and shows that they seem to have settled around 30-40,000 a day?

It appears that there’s a feeling we’re happy with number of deaths being lower than the last time we had this many cases. I don’t think we should be.
At the moment case numbers on the mainland have started shooting up. We’re reasonably steady, though at a much higher number than I’d like.
The booster programme currently appears to be the difference, so I suppose the message is to get your booster ASAP.
By March/April we should know whether we’ll need this every 6 months.

My booster done 6th Oct appeared on my nhs app today. For the last few weeks I have rarely seen anyone wearing masks in shops, our patients moan about wearing them to hospital appointments. I’m still feeling devastated at such a sudden death of a close friend the last person I would have thought to be affected so badly.

The government has announced the inclusion of boosters on the app within the last hour.
Currently there are three countries requiring this - Israel need your 2nd, or most recent within 180 days, Croatia and Austria it’s 270 days (9 months).
In regard to Skiathos, I’m going in the spring, then again in late September. I’m due my booster next week, which will cover me for the first visit, but not the second, if Greece follows.
It’s actually a little scary to imagine that I may need two boosters before a holiday I’ve already booked.
This sad event hammers home the necessity of getting a booster at the earliest opportunity. My thoughts are with you.

I’m confused about the timing of the booster jab, we had ours on Tuesday, exactly to the day after the guidelines date. However we have friends who received their initial vaccination a month or so after us who had their booster before us.?.

It should be 6 months. This is generally considered to be 183 days, but this varies - I've seen 180 days, 186 days, and 6 months to the day by calendar (so 5th April + 6 months = 5th October, and 12th May + 6 months = 12th November, etc.).
HOWEVER, some people are getting a 3rd/top-up jab. This isn't a booster. If you have serious immune system issues, then 2 jabs won't get you the same protection as everyone else, so you need three, usually with an 8 week gap between each + a booster 6 months after the 3rd.
However, they didn't figure this out until around 6 months after the high risk group were given their second, so their 3rd is being given - you guessed it - around the same time as others are getting their 6 month booster. It may be that your friends have immunity issues and were given their 3rd/top-up, rather than a booster.

I’m confused about the booster/ top up thing, I thought they are one and the same. With regards to my friends health conditions, they’re all in far better fettle than myself

Generally ‘top up’ means 2 isn’t enough, you need 3, and your booster comes later.
‘Booster’ is the jab you have 6 months after the first two (or three).
But yes, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

I’ve asked friends, daughter who work in the NHS , nobody aware of top up, cariad can you enlighten us.
Not saying it doesn’t exist, just not heard of it.
Either way, if your offered the 3rd jab please take it

I’ve heard of top-up and booster. I’m too thick to concern myself on the difference or similarity.
We both had our boosters over a month ago and if “they” tell me another is a good idea, I’ll get in the queue right away!

Yes there is a top up besides booster, for a very few groups. This will be offered to a very few groups of people at high risk with certain conditions or on specific drugs nothing to do with age. This will be offered 6 months after booster. We have been issued with a list of drugs usually taken by people who have issues with immune system like a lot of our rheumatoid patients. One of the drugs is methotrexate. We have hundreds of enquiries after there were vague stories in newspapers and it was on British rheumatologist society site. This we were totally unprepared for as government forgot to tell us the details first and we had to get guidance on this. BUT this is the plan for in the future ie roughly 6 months and could all change again , after”experts” I use the term loosely the stats! I had a call today anoto friends husband has covid had double jab and booster. But he is not ill with it more like a cold and was gardening today. She is in extremely high risk group copd heart issues and auto immune and has not caught it from him, very strange. They travelled by bus last Friday wearing masks, the bus was full then crowds of older school children got on standing in aisles no masks coughing sneezing over seated passengers. So can safely say masks don’t stop it, booster s won’t stop you getting it but will be less severe, and some people to avoid it regardless of health conditions . There is no set pattern at all, basically be as careful as possible and keep fingers crossed.
