I’m hearing of this more and more. Hampshire family fall foul of post-Brexit passport rule www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-61202948Check your passport’s issue date rather than the expiry date. You’ll need 10 years minus 3 months (so 9 years and 9 months) from the issue date. I’m 99% sure ours are good, but I’m going to check.

Mum nearly fell foul of this last year, I think we discussed it then. I had to swap over to new non EU one in 2020 or I'd fall out of the required time left for our 2021 holiday last year, think I lost about 8 months on a 10 yr passport switching over which was annoying.

I must agree Cariad, you wouldn’t go on a long journey in your car without checking the fuel gauge. I also agree with Kev ,a 10 year passport should be viable for 10 years.

My passport is fine, but I'd forgotten to apply for the GHIC card as my EHIC had expired. (Apparently they are still valid until they run out.) Well, my friend applied for hers yesterday and said it was really quick and easy ... mine would have been, except they sent me an email back immediately requesting proof of residency. I've had to dig out the council tax bill to photograph and attach and log into a bank account to get a pdf of a statement, which was all a bit of a palaver.
I must have had too many holidays this past couple of years, so they think I've left the country!!!!

Kate, it sounds like your friend may have logged on to one of the scam websites. The official government site warns against this. Her NI number should have been enough for her to get a card.

Yes it's a year or so since I got my GHIC and was never asked for any of that stuff, just NI number I think.

Thanks guys - but it was me who's been asked and I've just double checked and I definitely applied vie the correct website (you get redirected to NHS). I've since had an email to say my application has been approved & didn't sent another statement. Perhaps they've been receiving a lot of applications from people who don't qualify since Brexit?

Seeing this I decided to get them for us, then looked and found our EHIC cards expired a month or two ago. I only had to provide our NHS numbers.
Out of interest, for my motorbike injury and for Vera’s fall we both had ambulances and hospital treatment for free and weren’t even asked for the card.

An update - a brown envelope arrived in the post today, looking very like a tax letter. Luckily not - it was the GHIC!!! I'm really pleased that it's arrived before I go.
Only SEVEN days now 🎉🎉🎉
(Better get some euros!)
