I’ve had to cancel my September trip.
My dad so enjoyed his holiday with us this time that he’s arranged a holiday himself, myself, and my two brothers in his favourite haunt Tenerife this October, so I’m having to cancel Skiathos.
Still, it’ll be fantastic for the 4 of us to get away together, and I’m looking forward to it.
I say ‘cancel’. That’s probably what’s going to happen, but I’m just waiting at the moment. I’m going to lose my deposit, which around £60, but I think it’d cost £30 to move it anyway. There’s still a very slim chance of me moving it to next spring, but very slim indeed.

Ah. Dad liked Skiathos so much that he’s taking you somewhere else. Doh!

He always goes to Tenerife - he used to own a small apartment there, but I was unable to go.
As I shared my favourite holiday destination with him he decided to reciprocate.
He loved Skiathos.

It will still be there in 2023 unless Dennis finally wins the lottery and buys it.

It will still be there in 2023 unless Dennis finally wins the lottery and buys it. So in ‘23 we’re taking the extended family (8 of us) to Cyprus in August as SWMBO’s daughter is graduating from Uni. It’s costing us an upper and lower limb, so I’m not sure what the financial situation will be, but I’m hoping. It does now look like next September at the earliest, though.

Cyprus is great too though, in a very different way. Went in 2004, 2014 and a cheapo slightly out of season early trip in 2019.

I shall not be buying it - I have stopped buying lottery tickets. After doing it ever since day 1, I have not had even a moderate win - the highest was £150 and only once and the norm was an occasional £30, with more often £2.70. It crossed my mind that if I had put cash in a jam jar on the mantelpiece all these hundreds of weeks, I’d have built a decent pension pot. Sadly, at my age, I don’t expect to live as long as I’ve contributed to everybody else’s wins, but hopefully might amass enough to pay for a poorhouse funeral.

It's said that a lottery is a 'tax on the stupid', the argument being that the odds of winning and the amount you'd win vs the £2 for a ticket and odds of not winning don't add up in your favour. I agree with the maths, but the argument is flawed in itself. It presupposes that people buying a lottery ticket have sat down and done the maths incorrectly, or have not done the maths but have incorrectly guessed the maths is in their favour, and that this flawed maths is their reason for purchasing a ticket. That's clearly inaccurate, and I don't know and have never heard of anyone doing that. There's an old saying that you can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket. By buying a ticket, I make a small, negligible outlay which allows me to dream of winning the lottery with a genuine, if extremely slim chance that I might do so. If I didn't buy a ticket I'd 100% definitely not have even that slim chance. So the £2 buys me the right to dream of something which is possible. If I saved the money? £2 a week. £100 a year. I'm 57, so let's say I have another 30 years or so in me, that's £3,000. In 30 years £3,000 won't be worth much. Of course, tickets will be more expensive then, but there's no chance of the £2 I spend this week keeping up with inflation. Each to their own. I have a direct debit which goes into my lottery account monthly. I don't notice the money that goes - what would that amount to, one more bottle of wine a month? I don't miss that small amount of money.

Back to the changed holiday.
My dad is paying for Tenerife (cheers pops), which is lovely. It's all inclusive, as that's how he likes to go. It'll save on drinks, etc, and we'll eat out a few of the nights.
The 'graduation holiday' next year is also all inclusive. So that'll be two in a row. At the moment, no sign of being able to afford a trip to Skiathos next year, the big holiday will burn us out.
I'm still hoping for something, though. It's not over until the fat lady sings, and I'm resolutely not cancelling my holiday in September until I know I won't be able to move it to some other time, or it gets close enough that the cancellation fee goes up. Hope springs eternal.

Well, here we go.
SWMBO keeps getting views of next year’s holiday in Cyprus, reminding her that it’s in 400+ days, which has tipped her over the edge.
She can’t want that long, so she’s decided we’re holidaying next Spring Bank.
As a change from Koukounaries we’re stopping at the Alkyon in town. We’ve invited dad again, and he’s going to join us, for the full 10 days this time, too.
Hence my question elsewhere for Dave about the lift. 🤣

We've walked passed a few times and it looks smart from the front. This our first time staying in the town and we're loving it, so nice to walk straight into everything and we're right next door to Ginfish, very handy😄
