It seems a very long time since we visited our favorite island in June , tans all faded and cold Mythos all but a memory. Now the season is coming to a close, tavernas and accomodation shutting up shop for the winter, boats disappearing from the harbour and the only way to get to the other end of the island is by taxi or your own transport. I have never been to the island during the closed season, but often wonder what it would be like to wander through town, Troulos of Ag P, with it all shut up or take a stroll along one of the beaches with no beds or parasols. I don't know whether to feel happy for the residents, who can now take a well earned break or wish Skiathos was an all year round resort (as in resorts open and weather good enough for lounging on the beach). I know it is possible to visit at any time, but I don't think I could justify the expense or time out of season. Hopefully we will be back next year, to enjoy our usual places and see our friends on the island, but it suddenly seems along time away . Please feel free to keep posting on the forum during the winter months, to remind ourselves of this wonderful island. Richard

My thought for today is that of a lovely memory on 1st September. A friend who lives on the island taught me a new Greek phrase - Kalo Mina, which was translated to me as Happy first day of the month sort of. Well we went out on the evening of 1st September and as we wandered along the back streets of town the usual Greek old ladies were sitting three in a row outside a house, I presume, and I thought I would try out my greeting. Kala Spera they said and I replied Kala Spera then I said Kalo Mina - well they shreiked back in delight but of course I have no idea what else they said. It will be an unforgettable moment for me. In small way I feel I had made their day for a mere English woman to greet them like this. I will remember this greeting for next year. Kalo Mina to everyone reading this.

Kalo Mina! And here's to 2014. Too many weeks to start a countdown but as long as I know we're booked I can manage the UK winter. Visiting out of season always appeals to us. We are still restricted to 6 weeks per year leave, however, once we become part of the "retired" sector we might just look into it! Keep on posting & keep this forum alive

It's too early for us to countdown yet.

Woody's photo has brightened my morning - we were there at the same time as those two luxury boats - but I can't see us - we were sitting at one of the tavernas eating a Giros each. You've got to be a bit posh if you own one of those. I mean, they had crew members to drive them and wash them and drive the runabout to take you off to a beach somewhere. Both boy and girl crew members and in matching uniforms with the boat's name. That's really posh! Mind you, it reminds me a bit of when we go out for a drive and a picnic - we find a delightful remote spot, nobody about, set out our table and chairs and within seconds another five cars all pile around us to do the same! If I had a posh boat like those, I wouldn't take kindly to somebody else coming to park theirs right beside mine. We had to chuckle at two young women who sashayed up to the gangplanks and looked and posed hopefully. They eventually persuaded a crew member to take their photos, but it still didn't get them an invitation aboard. We shall of course be there again twice next year - holidays already booked and nearly paid for.

Great stories Dennis, but who would name their luxury yacht "Barbie" and have it painted grey? Surely it should be pink!

Barbie was registered in George Town. Somebody said the other one, Illusion registered in Malta, was owned by the President or Prime Minister or whatever of Malta. Presidenting or Prime Ministering must pay well.

Dennis, did you see this one when you were there too? Al Mirqab, owned by the President/Prime Minister of Qatar. As you say, heads of state are well paid and know how to travel in style!

No Woody, we didn't see that one. I felt embarassed enough looking at the other two - I'm such a lowly peasant I really should avert my gaze in their presence. Today marks yet another occasion when I didn't win the lottery. :-)

Tre. We've just done our first independent trip and I'll be posting some details soon - hopefully you'll find them useful. Whilst we're back in July on a package, already thinking about doing another independent late next year.

Yes patch, out of 8 visits, we have only been on a package twice. Every other time we have booked flights and stayed with Soula and Christos at the Diamond Apartments in Kolios, picked the vehicle up from the airport and been having a Mythos within the hour of landing! I know packages can be slightly cheaper, as the flights are so expensive, but it means you are not able to stay at some of the great accommodations that are not with a tour operator.
The only year we had a problem was when XL went bust and we had a bit of trouble getting the money back for the flight.

I can remember the time when XL went bust, we had gone out to Skiathos on a one way ticket and didn't have a set date for going back home, we used to just hunt around for a good price one way return whilst there. With the demise of XL tickets home became like gold and we had a bit of a . Matt in the then First Choice office was quite helpful but it was Dimitris who works at the airport who finally got us a seat home on the last flight out.. nearly had to stay all winter.
