I last went to Skiathos in 2007 which was my 12th visit. I've missed it and am considering going back this year, but am concerned I will be disappointed and the magic that Skiathos once had has been lost. So since that time, what's changed? I've heard that some of the beaches are trying to become Ibiza-ized and wanting to attract a younger crowd. Thanks in advance

Hi We have been going to Skiathos for the last 12yrs. We have seen some things come and go, but the one thing that has stayed the same is that Skiathos is still Skiathos. Yes there are a couple of loud beaches for the younger visitor, but they are very easy to avoid. Don't think that has particularly changed since 2007. The core of the island hasn't changed, it's still as beautiful as ever. I don't know if others will agree, but I think you will enjoy the island as much as you did before.

On my first visit last summer, we took the bus down to Koukounaries and went to look at the beach there. We took a quick look and turned round and left because it wasn't for us - not that it was bedlam, just far too full of beach people and it did have music which didn't appeal to us. As first timers, we weren't at all adventurous, so the only beach we truly experienced was our own at Troulos - it was great. We went there very early every morning for an 8:30am swim for an hour and it was magical.

I'm much of a fan of Koukounaries beach myself. The last time I went there I ended up having a row with the guy (a fat middle-aged Greek) with the sunbeds. I told him I wanted 3 sunbeds and 1 parasol. It was quite clear, using fingers and pointing. I gave him whatever it was and that was that. That day I didn't go into the water until a few hours later and when I did, I returned to find him removing the umbrella and saying I hadn't paid for it. I went mental! He knew I'd paid for it and had sat there waiting for me to go into the water before he cowardly removed it. I will never go back to Koukounaries or at least that end nearest the bridge anyway.

Didn't you know you are supposed to hang your swimming costume on the umbrella to show it's already taken?

Hmm, I was thinking more on the lines of those nice one piece cozzies, with frilly fringes at the top and a skirt thing down to your knees at the bottom (and a matching frilly cap and socks).
