We're looking at returning for first time in 8 years next year and doing it independently. Any advice on where to get the cheapest flights would be welcome.

Hi jrp, we always go independant, but haven't been this year. The flights are extortionate, but we usually go with flythomascook, as they usually just came out cheapest (but still expensive).
I have heard of people going via Schipol in The Netherlands and going to Skiathos on a dutch flight, but not sre how doable that is. There is always flying Easyjet to Athens and getting a bus and ferry to the island, again not sure on cost, but would probably come out a little cheaper.
The other option I have heard of is to buy a package and then tell the reps when you arrive that you do not want the accomodation. Again it would mean doing some calculations to find what is cheapes and suits your needs.

As usual this year has been a bit of a lottery regarding flights with some lucky people picking up a good bargain when booking very close to the departure date, Thomson come to mind.
If flying Easyjet to Athens as well as getting to the island by bus and ferry there is also the island hopper operated by Aegean Airways with a daily flight, you would have to check timetables to see if the times coincide sometimes it may involve an overnight stay at Athens airport.
Last year I booked a package for the first time for years due to the cost of flight only's. When are you thinking of going and which UK airport will you be using?

I just looked up a comparison booking for flight only, 2 persons, Thomas Cook from Birmingham, 19th June next year. It is £1102 for the starting price - I presume that adding extra baggage allowance and selecting preferred seats would bring it up somewhat.
Our 14 nights Thomson Holidays package to Villa Maria on 19th June from Birmingham is £1214 after having added £84 to cover extra baggage allowance and selected seats (and includes transfers of course - saving 4 Euros each way on the bus fares!). Booked online to get a discount of £74.

We're looking at traveling mid July from any of the London airports. I've been looking at the moment to get an idea and it's looking like a package is going to be the cheapest.

If you read the 2014 feedback post by Troll, you might also think of flying from Norway - he reckons we'd all weep if he let us in on the secret of their pricing!

I think this year there have been flights out of Luton and Stanstead as well as Gatwick, the further North you go the less options you have.
There used to be good deals for flights but in recent years the tour operators have really cut back in availablity so that you will buy a package and when they are available they are ridiculously priced. The answer would be for low cost airline to step in but it isn't looking likely I'm afraid.
