8-)Do many people whilst in Skiathos leave a deposit at the place your staying at for the next year so you can get the same room/view or do you just wait for the pacakages to come out and book it that way.. If anyone has left a deposit do you get it cheaper..

We believe we have found the place of our dreams, Villa Maria in Troulos. It's a package with Thomsons. It was our good fortune to be in room 1 on our first visit last year and we had booked again for June and September this year before we even left. So we asked if it would be possible to have the same room for this June. And it came to pass - I phoned a month or so in advance to remind Angela who we were and to beg for room 1. I phoned again a fortnight before we were due and she remembered us and agreed we'd get our preferred room, or the one next door which would be equally ideal - she needed advance warning to be able to juggle the package people around. And so we did, room 1 it was. We had left details of our dates for this year. We are going again a week this Friday and I phoned yesterday and before I could get on my knees, she said she would be giving us room 1 again. When we used to go to Corfu to privately booked accommodation, we used to pay in full for the next visit before we left - a bit OTT I suppose, but that was how we liked to do it and always the same room (there was only a choice of two and indeed the other one would have been OK, both rooms had their own advantages). As pckage holidays, of course we don't get any discount other than the online discount with Thomsons. And in our case, the online price has remained pretty much the same - perhaps I should add that we've already booked for next year, June and September - same price last year, this year and next year, about £20 cheaper in September than June.

I always reckon it's a case of get what you pay for. For us, Villa Maria is just what we want, so we don't have the choice of flight only as we couldn't get in there. I have usually found the flight only combination to be more expensive than packages, because flights are no longer cheap, but judged it to be worth it to get the accommodation we preferred. I've just looked at Flight Only for next June, travelling on the same flight as us would cost £1186.68. For ourselves, it'll be £1214.00, but includes two weeks accommodation and transfers. F/O was a reasonable deal when we went to Corfu because we stayed there for three weeks, but even then, separate pricing was not really an economic method.
From reading around, I gather there are lots of people who do go flight only, because they talk of the different routing options. I think some of them also take a chance, or even rely, on last minute booking flight deals. But whether they leave a deposit for next year is not mentioned. Some are obviously such steady regulars that the accommodation owners don't see any need for a deposit, which I personally would see as a commitment more than as money - if you leave a deposit you are less likely to not turn up.
