Good Evening all, First time visit for us next June , thinking about having a Car for a week in the middle of our trip , now couple of questions for you regulars any one got any recommendations of company's to use , I can do the interweb searching stuff but nothing beats a good personal recommendation in my view , second looking at some of the videos some on the roads/tracks look "interesting" so would a small hatchback be ok or would a small 4x4 be of more use , I did suggest looking at a Quad bike but that suggestion was rebuffed ( paramedic who attended say swelling should go down soon)

I'm no expert on Skiathos car hire companies. I hired from the first company we got to nearest our accommodation in Troulos - I can hear loads of shuddering folks! Anyway, it was within our budget (about 95 Euros for two days in June, less in September). It included full insurance, but I confess I'm glad I didn't test that.
We hired a Suzuki Jimny jeep, 4x4 and it worked well, handled everything the tracks threw at it. My only gripe was the steering was very low geared, so that when I did a very tight u-turn, it was very difficult to get the wheels straightened up without performing a somersault. There are some roads (e.g. to Kechria beach) where there is a nice big sign saying "4x4 only from here one". I believe quads count as 4x4 for this purpose.
A quad bike is not for us - I have heard horror stories about road holding (actually, NOT holding on bends). Mostly, I wouldn't want one for the lack of protectionj against the sun - it'll fry you. That's OK if you are good at being fried, I'm not.

Theres been a Threads on trip advisor recently about car hire, Victoria seems to be well favoured and reliable. I shall try them in june. If you wait until you get there often your accommodation owner has an arrangement with a company for good deals for their guests. Most travel insurance doesn't cover you for mopeds or quads.

book on line you will get a better deal as all insurance is included, as they try it on at the airport with top ups.

Hi Fozzy. In our 8 visits, except for one year we used Victoria Rental at Troulos (there is also an office in Skiathos Town). Or you can email Nikos at vicpap74@yahoo.gr and he will get back to you with a price and availability. A Suzuki Jimny 4x4 is the best bet if you want to venture away from the main road, as you have seen that most of the other roads are hard, rough dusty tracks, with many pot holes and steep parts. We always pick our vehicle up at the airport (we get away from the airport before all the package coaches) and deliver back to the airport on departure. It is a case of leave it in the car park with the keys under the drivers footmat. Another company I have used is Mustang Car Hire or email Magda at mustangrent@gmail.com Magda also owns the Taverna Alexandros in Skiathos Town and is a great place to eat (if you can find it!)

Thanks Bob. I still believe for a first timer, with or without a map to actually find Taverna Alexandros, would be tricky. It never looks the same when you are in those backstreets!

Quite right, Woody - we found it only when a young lady asked if we were looking for something, she guided us there - we had followed the map diligently and with great incompetence. And for anybody who wishes to know, it doesn't look at all like the videos etc, because it's closed during the day.

Even with a map, Alexandros can be hard to find................
If their neighbor keep up their extensive signing; follow signs for Andersons Bar.
