Hi Nod,
I think you may find it quite a bit busier in August (although never been then myself). I do believe the island fills up with young Greeks from the mainland (or is it Italians? I can't remember). It is probably the islands busiest time. I have heard the buses will be a nightmare and taverna tables difficult to get unless you book.
Sorry to be the bringer of bad news. I may be incorrect as I have said, I have not been during those two weeks myself.

I think you might find that a lot of regular visitors avoid August all together.
We too eat about 7pm, so tavernas are usually ok at that time.
Enjoy your visit.

No, it's not that bad.
Never been in July (far too many Scandinavians at that time, lol).
Been last 2 weeks in Aug. some years. Would call it "lively", not crowded.
Busses, discos and Italian restaurants crowded. But if you can cope without these, no problem.

We have been a coule of times at the end of August and we found it, like troll says, lively rather than crowded. It all depends on which tavernas you want to eat in, we have only ever booked at two tavernas in town to ensure we had a table and like has been mentioned it does depend on what time you want to dine. Just to help the two tavernas we visited and booked were the Paranaxos and a taverna up Evangelistra whose name escapes me at the moment. We have never used the buses so cannot comment apart from saying that when we have driven past bus stops during certain times of the day/night there were a lot of people waiting. Don't worry I have no doubt you will enjoy your stay on the island. I will find the name of the taverna in Evangelistra, it is worth a visit.

Usually the young mainlanders and Italians start to leave the island from around the 20th August, there or thereabouts, expect it to be very busy before then.

Hi Nod having been both in July and August I would say that I found August busier. I suppose it is the European holiday month so to be expected but you can always find quieter spots on the island, which is just as beautiful as ever

Agree about the buses but that always seems to be the case no matter when you go. Maybe slightly shorter queues than at other times. There are so many places to eat both in town and outside that I expect you will be OK. We certainly did not have any problems in August

Hi Nod .. all the boat trips fom the harbour offer great days out , it just depends on what takes your fancy on the day , the sailing experiences are fantastic as are the eleni trips (both day&night) but for completely different reasons , so it's worth just going with the flow when your on the harbours , I'm sure you won't be disappointed ... enjoy the Island .. Go to the pictures and watch Mama Mia. It doesn't start until after dark.

Good idea! Open air cinema, bar, great fun. Have managed eventually to persuade my daughter to come along for Mama Mia this year as it is just fun. Just don't leave getting your tickets until too near opening time as it sells out quickly. There will be other films on at other times too but a nice way to spend an evening.
